A flash of Inspiration

Story by Underground Dy Light

N.E.R.D – Case File F-CS05

The origins of the CS05-Flash come a long way and while everyone is aware of its usage, few are those who know how it came to be.

It began like any other story with a small man whose head was filled with dreams. A man that wished to become a Pokemon Master like every other trainer across the four regions.

However, that man’s path deviated after a peculiar encounter. In order to reach Lavender town to pursue his quest of badges, he had to cross the Rock Tunnel. Yet, he found out the hard way that there was no light within this underground world. Deep in the darkness, alone, he still managed to find his way, clinging to the wall as he moved forever forward.

1473029439_aloneinthedark.png.0ba176aff1a501480fcab4020636fca9.png

That tenacity brought him to the sun on the other side. However, this trip changed him. He was no longer the same.

The darkness…

The loneliness…

Whenever he slept or had a moment, it came back to him. And he woke up in cold sweat. As the time went by and as he progressed on his journey, those memories never left. Even after he managed to defeat the Pokemon Masters in Kanto…And then the ones in Hoenn, Unova and Sinnoh.

He had proven himself to be a legendary trainer yet his psyche was constantly under attack by the darkness.

That is when he decided to go back there once more. To face his fears. He grew so powerful that he should be able to face the darkness. Yet, even a master as he was, there was nothing he could do when faced with that primal fear. The fear of the dark.

As he moved through that cave once more, he came across a young trainer. That trainer was trembling and crying. He helped him and as they finally exited the mountain, the trainer thanked him profusely.

It was at this moment that he found a new goal.

He was unable to defeat the darkness that was rooted too deep within his mind but, maybe, just maybe, he could find a way to help others? Maybe it was possible for no one else to have to go through such a thing?

And so, he sent out on a brand-new journey. A journey to find a light for everyone.

He went back to [X-Town-X] where his journey first began. He met with the Prof. [X-name-X] and discussed the problem. Unfortunately, no solutions were found. He decided to first look towards the items that might prove helpful.

The eternal [Torche], a pricy cosmetic item that kept a flame going on eternally.

The [Light Ball] rumored to contain endless electricity.

The [Light Clay] which was a weird material that was quite bright.

The first was effective but too pricy and rare to become a mainstream item and recreating a cheaper version seemed impossible. The second and third options, while affordable in some ways, were not enough to truly dispel the darkness of the underground.

In the end, he gave up on finding items and decided to focus on the Pokemons themselves. He began with a Charmander. That tail of his…It could certainly light the path but not that much. Even after evolving up to a Charizard, it was not ideal. After all, it had to be bright enough… He searched for Pokemons with greater flames like Magmar but even then, the brightened-up area remained small and the darkness surrounding it frightening.

He felt defeated but did not give up. He decided to change the focus of the study. What made light in this world? Electricity!

He decided to go ask experts on the domain and went to the Power Plant. There, he met [X-name-X] and a few other workers. He discussed his issue at length and learnt of the principles behind the existence of light:

An electric light is made from electric power. The three main categories of electric lights are incandescent lamps, which produce light by a filament heated white-hot by electric current, gas-discharge lamps, which produce light by means of an electric arc through a gas, such as fluorescent lamps, and LED lamps, which produce light by a flow of electrons across a band gap in a semiconductor.

Of the three, all required an additional component yet only one of these could be found anywhere. He decided to focus on the gas-discharge lamp method. After all, the air itself was gaseous. There had to be something doable there.

As a Pokemon Master, his first thoughts were about finding the solution through Pokemons. With Pokemons, people could travel the lands, the oceans and the skies. They could dig tunnels and teleport over hundreds of kilometers. Surely, there had to be a way for Pokemons to create a light?

He studied and studied until finally, he found a way. Through the use of electric currents discharged in a particular arc through the atmosphere, he managed to establish a constant light brightening the surroundings.

He tentatively decided to call it ‘The Flash’…

From there, he experimented with many different Pokemons, trying to see if it could become a widespread move.

Every electric-type Pokemon was able to instinctively learn it. He was overjoyed by such a discovery. And he decided to see if others could also learn it as he did not want it to remain something usable by the few but instead, usable by the many.

A lofty ideal indeed but after two more years of work and tweaking with the move, he managed to teach it to a Pokemon of a different type. A Bulbasaur.

Then, to a Claifairy… a Paras… a Meowth…a Alakazam… a Noctowl… and dozens of others.

He published his research and gave out the movement’s formula freely to the world. A donation that earned him a World Prize of Merits.

The Secret Move – Flash was born.

Yet, contrary to his expectations, not everyone was able to get their hands on it. The circulation of the technique was being blocked here and there to his great disappointment. While his heart was benevolent, others were not always so.

Depression attacked him and won. He secluded himself in a lighthouse in [X-city-X]. Only a few close friends remained in touch as he closed his doors to the rest of the world.

After a debate with one such friend, he was told:

1764420070_atlighthouse.thumb.png.0a5d6634fdc7f5410448cf3044228832.png

Since this was the ugly truth, then he only had to do one thing: find others of the same mind as he was.

He decided to create an organization. He named it ‘The Mountaineers Association’ with the goal to provide a light to all people who tried to overcome the darkness. He walked throughout the four regions in search of like-minded people and, he was surprised to find dozens…no, hundreds…of them.

From there on, everywhere a Mountaineer was, no one had to fear the darkness. For they had the secret move ‘Flash’ and were willing to teach it and give it to anyone for free. And it was solely with the purpose to help others.

As for the great inventor of the Flash, people forgot him little by little as the Mountaineers replaced him in the heart and memories of people. He did not care about it in the slightest as he achieved his goal. And so, he retired with a happy heart and a calm mind.

It was only a few years later that he resurfaced. He had been informed of a weird portal opening at the top of Mt.Coronet by an old friend named Cynthia. She told him of the adventure she went through over there due to some hoodlums calling themselves Galactics…bunch of fools. But smart fools who managed to open the door to a new world.

A distorted and dark world…

And as he learnt of it, a new goal appeared.

He would bring the light to this other world too.

As he stood there, facing the open portal, it is told that his friend was there, trying to stop him from leaving this world for the other.

What happened on top of the Mt. Coronet remain a secret but a rumor state that, as he jumped within the portal, the man said that “everyone deserves a chance at a brighter day”

1060684403_brighterday.thumb.png.198328d5c626aa823174d609538c913e.png

To this day, the whereabouts of the inventor remain unknown and his friend rejected all questions ever asked to him about that.

While the fate of the man is a mystery, it remains a fact that he left behind a Light that will forever brighten everyone's path.

1 out of 108 Ain't Bad

By: Alysstrasza (@Kiralexis)

4My1wLL.png

As she stood in the purification circle, Alyss couldn't help but wonder why her Spiritomb wouldn't follow her in. Whatever magic was in this circle, it relaxed her muscles and made her lower her defense- maybe Spiritomb knew that feeling and didn't like it? Regardless of the reason, she pressed onward. They were here for one purpose only: to study Ghost-type pokemon, as requested by the Neo-Enix Research Department, which she had been assigned to recently.

Enix as a whole had been more than welcoming to her, but she felt a desire for something more, and applied to a few different sub-teams within Enix; NERD had responded the same day, as eager to accept her as she was to help them out, she was given a task that same day: researching Ghost pokemon and their habitat. Though she wasn't given any other particular mission, she remembered from the Job Description when she had applied that they liked initative in regards to their research information, so Alyss took it upon herself to give her research more oomph: why do certain Ghost-type Pokemon stay in some locations, but not others?

Her Spiritomb had been an ally of hers for a few months now, ever since she caught him just South of Solaceon Town. Her Pokedex explained how Spiritomb was actually the combination of 108 different souls trapped inside the same Pokemon. A perfect test subject, she figured, so she decided to cart him around to all sorts of different locations where Ghost-type pokemon could be found.

Lavender Town, in Kanto, was where she had decided to start. Everything was going smoothly, with Spiritomb not minding any of the atmosphere or other Ghost-type Pokemon of Pokemon Tower, until she reached the Purification Circle on the Fifth Floor, where she found the first oddity. Her Spiritomb would, under no condition, follow her into the circle. Alyss, and her Spiritomb, explored the rest of the Tower, but she found no other instances of weird behavior, so she noted it down and moved on.

Alyss found her next objective in Mt. Pyre of the Hoenn Region, and brought Spiritomb along with her. She noted the Pokemon types that she encountered, as well as noticing that her Spiritomb seemed to linger behind her, as if reading the Grave Stones this time. This behavior was new, and distracted Alyss from recording the rest of the Ghost-type Pokemon that she encountered, instead observing exclusively her Spiritomb, who was spending longer and longer observing each grave stone. As an astute observer, Alyss couldn't help but wonder what exactly was making her Spiritomb act like this, so she started to also write down the names of each Gravestone that Spiritomb focused on, which was roughly every third name.

Eventually, the two of them reached the top floor of Mt. Pyre, where there was a single Gravestone of a different stone entirely. Spiritomb rushed over to this Grave, and Alyss followed, but then they seemed to lose interest and turned to face Alyss as if they hadn't just spent an hour reading names. With no other choice but to move on, Alyss wrote down the name of the marble Gravestone as well as all the others around, and started walking towards a hole in the ground that she notice.

rBwbsDx.png

She fell down and hurt her butt, and Spiritomb followed after her happily. Realizing her research here was done, she headed towards the Unova Region next, remembering that the Old Chateau in the Sinnoh Region was always being studied anyway by someone nicknamed 'the Professor', whoever that was. It took her a week to figure out where she was even headed, but eventually she found the Celestial Tower north of Mistralton, which was exactly what she was looking for.

Inside the Celestial Tower, Alyss returned to writing down every Pokemon she encountered for her notes, and continued observing Spiritomb's behavior. She found that her Pokemon was not acting weird here, but was instead staying very close to her. Eventually, Alyss and Spiritomb climbed to the top of the Celestial Tower, where they found the Mourning Bell.

8NCrUO9.png

Spiritomb rushed up towards the bell, then turned to look at Alyss as if asking the object's purpose. Alyss explained what it was for, and how people could use the ringing of the bell to help with their grief of losing a Pokemon. Spiritomb turned towards the bell once more, staring at it intensely. Alyss walked up towards it, watching Spiritomb and the bell at the same time. She wondered once again why he had been staring at all of the graves at Mt. Pyre, and what exactly her Spiritomb was looking for. Was one of the 108 souls inside of them still grieving for itself?

She remembered how, in her youth, her father had given her a Charmander for her 9th Birthday, but an unfortunate boating accident en route to Sinnoh... it was a painful memory, and not one she enjoyed lingering on.

She rang the bell, letting the object serve its purpose and help her get over her grief. Her Spiritomb brushed against her leg, as if hugging her and thanking her for it. This was also new behavior for her Pokemon, so she wrote it down in her notebook quickly, then hugged the Spiritomb back. While she had her arms wrapped around the Keystone Pokemon, she heard faintly, as if very far away, a distinct cry that she could never possibly forget.

"Char!"

Alyss was overwhelmed with emotion for a brief moment and held Spiritomb even tighter. The cry was not heard again, but Alyss was sure she hadn't heard it in the physical world. Where ever that cry had come from, Alyss was the only person in the world who heard it. Regardless, she'd completely forgotten what her original research task was, and began to write about her Spiritomb and their crazy antics at Pokemon Tower, Mt. Pyre, and Celestial Tower.

The Evolution of Marill– Research # 93

Research by Curseman

So, before we get into how the Aquatic Mouse Pokémon “Marill” changed into the Aquatic Bunny-like Pokémon “Azumarill”, we require some background information on Marill.

Marills are Aquatic Mouse Pokémons that live near the beaches in the Hoenn Region. Marills can usually be found in groups of 4-5 Marills and they sustain themselves by fishing in the nearby sea. Marills also feed the aquatic plants as their surface oil is very nutritious to them. Marills usually tend to stay away from forests as vicious Sevipers and Arboks are settled in such places...

Now that we have some basic knowledge of how the Marill Colonies work, we will look at the journey of the first-ever Marill which went through Evolution to become an Azumarill.

The 25th November 2002, in a Marill Colony near Petalburg City, a new Marill was born. But something was different about this one. It had green skin. The parents were confused and scared that their child had some kind of disease. The colony decided to expel the child as it might be a curse or a sickness.

image.png.79b6c7299181aff2b58f0c5cacaf0414.png

The sad baby Marill being abandoned by his parents just wandered off into the dark forests of Petalburg Woods where it was almost killed by a wandering Seviper. But a Mother Lopunny rescued it and took it into its shelter.

1899373871_LopunnySaves.PNG.381c962a4d38b02ddf93115714d3a6a4.PNG

In the lopunny's home, the special Marill lived happily with its new bunneary sibling. He had fun, but he could never catch the bunnearys as they hopped around very fast. Seeing them bounce around so much, the Shiny Marill started using its tail to bounce and became faster. Marills are usually known to use their tails as an anchor while fishing, but this was the first time ever that a marill used its tail as a pogo stick to bounce around.

One day while looking for berries in Peralburg Woods, the Lopunny family was attacked by a Seviper swarm. The Lopunny mother told the children to run while she fended off the Sevipers. The Children ran, but after running for a while they reached a dead end and found themselves cornered by one Seviper. The Marill feeling a need to protect the family which gave him shelter started defending its sibling and in that moment of extreme bravery, in a bright flash of light, the green Marill turned into a gold skinned shining Azumarill and was able to scare the Seviper away and protect his new family.

Evolution.PNG.d9d296311a095d7b2d24f3f3ab47ee74.PNG

After growing old enough, the golden Azumarill decided to visit its old parents, and seeing its form, the Colony appointed the golden Azumarill as the new leader of their Colony where it taught the other Marills the power and usefulness of the great [Bounce]. This is how the evolution of the first-ever Marill into an Azumarill transpired.
