How does move Trick (not Trick Room) work?

How does the Trick move (NOT trick room) work with wild encounters? When I initiate Trick in battle, I can see that I take possession of the item that the wild Pokemon was carrying. But after the battle ends, I'm no longer in possession of the item. Is this the expected behavior? When reading about Trick online, I'm led to believe that the item switch is permanent but perhaps the mechanic is different in PokeMMO?

Yep that's how it's supposed to work here. If you want to permanently keep the item, you'll have to either catch the pokemon or use Thief/Covet. All Trick is good for is telling you that the pokemon has the item you want (Frisk does a better job of it though).
