Instances?

Can someone explain to me what Instances are? I only have 6 badges and started in Johto if that matters. 
 

Also, I think I’ve heard people talk about Dungeons and Raids and stuff.. what are those?

Instances show the wait time for certain events such as leagues, Ho-oh and Red. They are not related to new raids.

 

Edit: The new raids are pillars of light in different regions where 4 players come together to defeat an Alpha Pokémon, once you defeat the Pokémon they will give you a dead flower, experience candy and the Alpha Pokémon you defeated. This is the reward for now and will likely change when raids become permanent. 

Regarding the dungeons, they are only rumors but the administrators have not yet confirmed anything.
