IP Board has a feature built-in specifically for creating / managing user ranks.

People who want the highest rank the fastest or the most awards as a collection could be posting a ton just to reach that desire. I myself, when I was much younger had posted on a certain forum for countless hours to reach a certain 'rank' It's mostly for bragging rights and to show that you are an active member of the community. (Note: 'Posting a lot' is not to be confused with 'Spamming')

Forum staff are hired for a reason.

I have administrated many IP Board forums and I personally love user ranks, It creates something to achieve by posting and it usually pushes more people onto the forum, this may also create many 'spammers' but of course the forum staff are here to handle that. You are also correct, forum badges / ranks are very easy implement.

I've seen private server suggestions but never user created channels. If this has been suggested many times like you stated, the staff may delete this topic when they see fit.

I've seen many people suggest / request the systems source code to create private servers and such to play with friends. But of course that isn't going to happen, so I have a suggestion that pleases those people and no source code released publicly. This keeping us all happy. User Created Channels This could be a button or entirely command based, simply; /createchan is the command to create a channel planetultra is the channel name PASSWORD is the channel password Want to join your friends private channel? /joinchan Examplename Examplepassword Or this could handled with buttons and UI elements. This suggestion allows people to play with friends privately and the devs keep all the source code. It's a win-win situation.

Easy way is to open bg.png in Photoshop, then 'place' your new image layer on top of that. This way it is the correct size and formatted correctly.
