Pokemon X and Y are being released October 12, so any pokemmo update before or within close proximity to the release date would be catastrophically bad timing. People will be too engaged with either playing X/Y, or hearing the news about it to care about the pokemmo update. Therefore, the pokemmo update is being pushed to 1 month after October 12. The update will be, probably within 7 days error, November 12. This will allow the hype of X/Y to fade, so that the players will be less enthralled with the game and the non-players will have already read about X/Y to their heart's content. This will mean greater attention to the pokemmo update. Also, because this update will have taken 5 months, the update will have a great amount of new content which will include new breeding mechanics, legendary implementation, new competitive items, greater move and ability support, GUI updates, the Elite Four overhaul, possibly a new region, new sprites and vanity items, more custom content, gift shop items which may include the portable P.C. and much more we can not easily speculate to. This will probably be a huge update (but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be executed well) The developers are relying on this update to be a big one, because they are currently watching dropping profits from gift shop sales as the player base has grown bored. The amount of active players is dropping to dangerous levels, and the release of X/Y will only deal greater blows to the number of pokemmo players and subsequently the developers' profits. The developers will devote an unusually large amount of time and energy to this update to keep this project as a relevant revenue stream. TL;DR They want money, so this coming update will be a huge one.
