I'm pretty new to the whole scene. Like, I-learned-what-OU-meant-just-yesterday kind of new. But, despite that, I feel like your concerns ring true. I'm afraid that after I finally make my ideal team, God forbid I'll wake up one morning and want an entirely different one. There is very little financial forgiveness towards experimentation, as far as my understanding of breeding goes.... Maybe it won't get much better until PokeMMO expands from Gen 3. As I was putting together my first OU team via Pokemon Showdown, I was surprised by how limited Gen 3 is, compared to Gen 6. It made me see more clearly how rigid the meta is. I mean, there's probably still room for exploration and originality in Gen 3. But I feel a long-term solution would be expanding PokeMMO into newer generations. Honestly, I can't see the meta changing in a significant way within Gen 3, without some serious reworking. It'd probably take forever to do, and in the meantime, I'd agree that making breeding cheaper would be a great way to encourage competitive creativity. Maybe even "cheap breeding" weekends, where it's not forever cheap to breed, just as an event sometimes.
