Oh, then why are we arguing? Although I have to say, that Athreos' ability does affect tokens. However, returning it to the hand is useless making Athreos not that great of a card unless real creatures are sacrificed. Also, tokens do trigger enter the graveyard effects. They enter the graveyard and cease to exist. So if you have any tricks up your sleeve that takes advantage of it, I don't know what, feel free to use them. Modern or Standard, I would say play what your friends are playing. It would be a bit unfair for him to be using a modern deck versus a standard deck. Unless this is kitchen table magic, then everything is okay. Play with Black Lotus proxies. If you do go with Modern, I agree with Xela for the most part.

No. If you really want a planeswalker in your deck that's standard legal, probably Elspeth is the best one because she can produce tokens that you can sacrifice. But she's like what, $20 each?

Read the bones is a pretty good common, so yes. Deicide will exile all of your Athreos cards if it hits one of them. Trawler will still do nothing about it because it only affects the graveyard. I also don't remember if there are any cards that throw -1/-1 counters on creatures in standard. If your friends are running standard, then the trawlers should be replaced with something else. Edit: Oh, and Gods Willing. Perfect common card to use too. I edited my post a while ago. I double checked and realized, but when they're enchantments the -1/-1 counters won't kill them, only if they become a creature again. However like I said before, the gods wouldn't see the graveyard and thus the Trawlers wouldn't need to be there. Unless of course, counter spells are present. If they're exiled, they're not in the graveyard. Exiling the gods is the best course of action for his friends. I agree with you there, but I still don't think the Trawlers are useful. It is. However, as the saying goes: Easy to learn, hard to master.

Is his friend running counters in his deck? Trawler affects the graveyard, not the exile zone. Bounce them, sure, okay, but it still doesn't hit the graveyard. He can sacrifice his creatures to make the -1/-1 counters not have any effect due to a lack of devotion. Your move.

Seems okay if you have a low budget. I'd remove the Masks of Avacyn and Fonts of Return though. Replace the Gnawing Zombies with Scholars of Athreos. If you can afford it, one or two more Sorins wouldn't hurt. River Trawlers are useless because the gods are indestructible and will never see the graveyard unless you're forced to discard or are milled. If you want to run it as a standard deck, you'll need to remove the cards from the Innistrad block as that cycled out a while ago. If you don't care about it being standard, replace the doom blades with go for the throat or dismember.

That would be okay, but less people opening boosters means there would be less cards to go around. Six works, but eight is ideal.

We would need at least eight people for a legitimate draft.

I'm probably the best player of MtG here and I don't even consider myself to be that good.
