  1. I feel like there is a story hiding in here
  2. Alright! I think I got it now! Thank you all for contributing and particularly thank you NikhilR and OrangeManiac for your effort!
  3. Alright first thing Why would I think this is a strawman? You used a scenario where the formula is being used and the result is an undesirable team in order to make an argument that the formula is flawed. This is exactly how an argument against the formula should work. Second, I know that I might be doing this a bit too much, but I really want to thank you for the time and effort you take to help me with my questions. You helped me a lot and I now have some understanding of what I need to look out for when making a team. There is one thing that I'm not sure if I understand correctly, I don't think that I get the "tiering" thing. is this like a thing where there are tournaments for each tier so that even a "never used" pokemon can be a viable choice in a "NU" tournament? or am I getting this completely wrong?
  4. I really like it how everyone here have some basic or above knowledge of economy. This is not sarcasm, I am pleasantly surprised by this because I'm not used to it.
  5. Alright, thank you very much, this response must have taken a lot of time and effort and I appreciate this very much. Also thank you for the explanation, this is exactly what I was asking and needed to know, this was very helpful. so, if i get this correctly, both walls and sweepers job is to "dish out more damage than you take", either by not taking a lot of it or by dishing a lot of it. and the counters and checks are on a case-by-case basis. Did I get this right? If so, does the common suggestion "1 physical sweeper 1 special sweeper 1 physical wall...etc" is a suggestion made so that a noob like me will be more likely to have a team that has as little counters as possible and that can checks as often as possible? Also, I've heard the term "support" and "utility" but I do not understand really what do they do. can one pokemon in your team affect another one somehow? is this about a pokemon that can use status effects on the enemy? what kind of "set up" can you do in this game? I know it's not realistic to give me every supporting tactic in the game, and I don't ask to doubt the fact that a "support" exists, but I would like to understand better what this role includes. a few examples would be very helpful. Same thing about pokemon that can "work together as a team" or "synergies". does this term means simply "have a variety of pokemon so you will have an answer for every occasion"? is there some way they canwork together? and if so how? Thank you for thanking me for posting (I will not be beaten at being nice!)
  6. Thank you all for the warm welcome!
  7. First of all, thank you for your response. I do understand that there is a team effort going on here. I also know the fact that the "support" role exists and that it is used by good players, so this has to be a viable, if not optimized role in your team, what I do not understand is "how" and "why". Going by your example, I can at any moment decide to change my pokemon or to use a move. so lets say that I have a physical tank in my team. what would it do? do I let it out and do what? what moves does a tank do and why would I want those moves done? what advantage do i get by letting my enemy attack my tank instead of attacking it with a sweeper? I know there is an answer to have, and that answer can be conveyed with words. This is probably not as effective a way to get information as people might think. while there are some things that can only be understood by experience, there are also many things that can be understood by words. and way faster at that. I can play match after match, spending time to analyze anything that happened and why, and there is an unknown amount of gameplay time between me and the answer. even worse - i might not know what question to ask. all of this effort can be shortened by a huge margin if I was just told this. This is the reason we have guides at all, so people wont make random choices until everyone understands individually that there are "sweepers" and "walls" and all of that. so that new players will not take as many years to develop the meta in themselves. I firmly believe that the question "why wall?" can be answered with words, and that if I read up as much as I can before charging head on to battle, I will have a much faster and easier time, and could focus on things that can I can only get by experience Her point, thank you very much. Also, thank you for responding. Maybe I wasn't clear, I know how a meta is created, I know that many people tried different teams and found out that having a wall is probably good. My question is why is a wall good? how is it different than having a sweeper? what does a wall do exactly and how does it help your team? those are things that many people learned the hard way - by having battle after battle after battle and eventually the idea sunk in, but that doesn't mean that it can't also be learned by listening to others. Thank you for responding again. I am fully convinced that this team is good and will beat me. now I ask why and how? what will they do? this cant be a huge trade secret that is forbidden to put on paper. this team will do moves and probably switches and win. how? why? what advantage do they have? I can't make an informed decision for a team like this. I an either copy those 3 pokemon into my team or don't because I know one combination that works instead of knowing how it works and building a team based on the information. Thank you for responding. I can do a lot of things, I am a strong independent woman that can do anything. Still, I want to make informed decisions. If I indeed choose a hyper offensive play, I want to know why, what different is it from a "balanced play" and what disadvantages would I have. the tank is just an example, at the same time the question can be "why would i want a sweeper? what would the sweeper do?" I don't want to make an offensive team just because I do not know the advantages of a "balanced" team. I know current meta has walls, I know they are effective, I know they are common, my question is "why?" and "what do they do?" Thank you for responding. I did not see this guide before, thank you very much for linking it for me. it is informative and helpful, but it helps me understand only half the question. I now understand what a wall does on its turn, and how a defensive team plays, but I do not know what this means for a "balanced team"? how is a wall+sweeper different than 2 walls or from 2 sweepers? I understand now that there is the factor of "being risky" but is that the only thing? if so, how is a tank+sweeper "balanced"? This also helps with one example, the wall, to my understanding there is also "support" and "utility". Usually in guides for the meta in any game, after explaining the roles, there is an explanation of why they exist in the meta and what happens if you don't have them. it might be just "you'll have disadvantage [X] that an be overcome if you know what you are doing" but if I read a guide to the meta, then by definition I don't know what I'm doing, and would like to know just that. Information on why things are the way they are lets me know what I'm doing. Only then I could breakk the mold and plan my team my own way while knowing exactly what play style it will create and what advantages and disadvantages I will get.
  8. I'll disclose that I do not have all that much play time so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I actually think that the economy in pokemmo is actually better and more stable than any other online game that I have yet to play. Maybe I am missing some stuff, but the global market has items with prices that best reflect the effort that it takes to acquire them and to my understanding, there isn't a bad case of inflation (that is to my opinion a much worse scenario then the other way around) I admit that I do not know much about berries and late game cash sinks. I would like to know more and to be corrected if I'm wrong
  9. Hello and thank you for taking the time to read up my questions. TL;DR - I do not understand why there are roles for pokemon. I have been taking my time to read up on as many guides as I can to have better understanding of the current meta, but I have encountered some difficulties while trying to learn and build up a plan for my team. Interesting enough, those are the same problems that I tend to face in every competitive game that I have seen so far. I would like to ponder the reason for why this is so widespread among communities and games that have seemingly nothing to do with each other but for now I rather focus on learning everything that I can. So I've read over and over that the current meta is to have a team of a physical and special sweepers, physical and special walls, a "support" and a "utility". But what is so desperately missing is why this is the current meta. I am aware that the meta is created for a reason, after optimization attempts of many people in a competitive environment, I do understand this, but it is very important when you teach about the meta to also teach about the reason of why and how it came to be. I know that it is recommended to have a physical wall, but I couldn't find out why. In other games the "tank" is soaking up damage while the "DPS" is doing damage, but in here there is only one pokemon active at a time. I know that the current optimization is to have wall, I believe that there is a very good reason for it, but I can't understand why. This is rather dangerous for a community that wants to have as many good players as possible, that are well informed and fun to play with. and I am sure that this is the goal of all of those guides, that are filled with good intentions and written by good players, but the problem is that not explaining the reason behind the meta might cause players to either disregard the meta and have a team of all sweepers, or to just copy what the guides say and not have personal judgement. As a new player, my personal judgment tells me "sweepers are cool, lets have all of them" and the guides tells me "no don't do that this is not effective". So in this case I have the option of either 1. listen to my own judgement, in which case the guide might have not been there and did not create a difference, or 2. disregard my personal judgement and do what the meta tells me even if i have no idea why. in this case I am none the wiser, and will likely just copy whatever 6 pokemon are the most popular right now because I can't think for myself. Ideally, if I can understand the reason behind the meta, I could understand why this wall pokemon is so important, and then I could start trusting my own judgment to create my own team, So to the actual question that I think will improve the game for everyone if they'll be addressed more frequently- What exactly are the basic roles for pokemon in the meta? What exactly does each role do? not in general vague terms like "support supports your other pokemon". how does it do that? what exactly can it do on its turn to accomplish that? What happens if you don't have a pokemon of one role? what if you don't have a physical tank? or a support? what if you have a sweeper instead? what kind of disadvantages would that create and how? Until I know this any attempt to do things based on my own judgement will be as effective as making random decisions, and I will probably not be as fun an opponent as I could be. I also want to add that I have no malice or anger towards anyone and if this post came out as harsh know that it was not my intention at all and I didn't want to sound condescending at all and would appreciate any response.
  10. Hello pokeworld. I am new to the forum and was told that here is where I should introduce myself. My name is Laila and I'm a noob for pokemon, I have only played a bit of red and yellow a while back so I'm doing the effort to try and catch up to current gen and all of its mechanics. So... nice to meet and stuff I guess?
