Extend pokemon sprite modding support for layered pngs

Question

Hi, is there a way to extend modding with the ability to overlay multiple images over a pokemons png? When the pokemon sprite png loads in battle then it layers on extra pngs based on a weight you can put into their name. For example if 1 is the pokemon you can do 1_1 and 1_2 and when it renders 1 it renders 1_1 and then 1_2 on top of it.

 

This way the modders wouldn't have to alter the base sprite of the pokemon to layer extra information on top of it, much like how particles are layered on top.
