It does, you likely battled something with the ability water absorb, dry skin, or using the item absorb bulb.

I think I have heard of something like this happening, and I think opening and closing the chat typically makes the controls come back(or maybe it what makes the controls go away), next time it occurs you can try that, and do you have any information on what you were doing when this happened?

You can fly back to kanto mainland if you have a pokemon with fly, open your town map with the pokemon with fly in your team, move the cursor over the little square on the bottom right and press a and it'll switch between the island and kanto maps, then select your destination in kanto.  Looking into the ferry issue.
