iSmashbro
Looking at the OP, I have came up with a decent list of the top tier threats, and their most threatening characteristics/sets. For the sake of convinience, I will put every but their names in a spoiler tab, in case you just want to skin through the actual list, and not the details. Abra
Despite having paper-thin defense, Abra is a very dangerous threat if not handled in time. One may think hitting it with a physical move would be an easy task, but base base 105 Sp. Atk makes Abra the most powerful special attacker in the tournament, which can be coupled with Calm Mind. If you thought this was terrorizing, Abra is one of 5 Pokemon to hit 80 speed without weather, and can even use Taunt on Pokemon ready to use a status move. If you lose your method of outspeed this, prepare for one hell of a time. Example set: Abra @ Chesto Berry EVs: 248 Speed / 252 Sp. Atk w/ Timid nature ~ Calm Mind ~ Psychic ~ Hidden Power Fire ~ Taunt Taunt and a Chesto Berry would look strange to anyone, but this allows it to Exeggcute both before weather is set up (It can still go boom, though), and after weather is set up (Hidden Power Fire boosted by the sun is an easy KO on Exeggcute).
Meowth
While the loss of Fake Out is a huge downfall for what would be a perfect lead, Meowth, still stands as an decent lead lead. Meowth can hit for unresisted coverage with Return and Shadow Ball, Taunt as your opponent tries to cripple you, set up on you, and you can set up a Rain Dance and Sunny Day as a parting memento. Meowth is also one of the 5 Pokemon to hit at least 80 speed unboosted, so you can prevent anything not named Murkrow, Voltorb, and Diglett from setting up (Shadow Ball will KO Abra, but you still speed tie with it) While Meowth is a good lead, it will have some competition with Sableye... Who happens to be bulkier, immune to it's Return, and can Fake Out. Example set: Meowth @ Silk Scarf EVs: 252 Atk / 244 Speed / 14 HP w/ Jolly nature ~ Return ~ Shadow Ball ~ Taunt ~ Sunny Day / Rain Dance This set's main goal is to prevent the opponent's set up, hit for as much damage as posible, and set up your weather just before you faint. Iron Tail also gets unresisted coverage, but the accuracy is a little unforgiving, specially with the chance of a Gastly popping up.
Voltorb
Voltorb is the fastest unboosted Pokemon in the entire tournament, and can serve as a rain lead, rain sweeper, and use Explosion when it's done. When you see, this, be cautious about what it can do, because not even Diglett can revenge this monster. Example set: Voltorb @Silk Scarf EVs: 252 Sp. Atk / 244 Speed / 14 Attack w/ Naive nature ~ Thunderbolt / Thunder ~ Hidden Power Ice ~ Taunt / Thunder wave / Rain Dance ~ Explosion Nothing is safe.
Exeggcute
You heard me talk about weather... Well here comes the reason to use sun: Exeggcute. This thing can outspeed the entire tier in the sun (Besides the odd Hoppip), and spam Solarbeam, Psychic, and Hidden Power. If that wasn't bad enough, it can use Explosion on checks such as Murkrow (or Abra), and even use Hypnosis and Stun Spore to cripple threats without losing your Exeggcute. While it cannot one-shot everything with Solarbeam, Psychic, and Hidden Power, Exeggcute is still a heaby force not to be taken lightly. Example set: Exeggcute @Silk Scarf / Lum Berry EVs: 58 HP / 200 Sp. Atk / 36 HP / 40 Atk w/ Mild nature ~ Solarbeam ~ Psychic ~ Hidden Power Fire / Explosion ~ Sunny Day / Hypnosis / Stun Spore / Explosion It cleans with it's STAB (same type attack bonus) attacks, can status Pokemon that can take a hit, and can go boom if all else fails. Exposion baiting with a Sableye/Gastly can rid of it without losing more than 2 Pokemon (And even without losing any if you play well enough).
Horsea
Exeggcute's rain counter-part: Horsea. Horsea outspeeds the entire unboosted tier with only 14 speed EVs and rain, and can hit hard with STAB rain boosted Surf, Ice Beam those pesky Grass-types, and Hidden Power Grass to rid of specially defensive Water-types Example set: Horsea @Mystic Water EVs: 252 HP / 244 Sp. Atk / 14 Speed w/ Modest ~ Rain Dance ~ Surf ~ Ice Beam ~ Hidden Power Grass Specially Defensive Lotad can Leech Seed you, and proceed to laugh at everything you do. If you lack Hidden Power Grass, Specially Defensive Wooper becomes a problem.
Lotad
It can be used to counter Horsea in the rain, or used as a weaker Swift Swim user itself. If you don't want to find a Horsea with Hidden Power Grass, this is your alternative. Example set: Lotad @Leftovers EVs: 248 HP / 14 Def / 248 Sp. Def w/ Calm nature ~ Giga Drain ~ Ice Beam ~ Toxic ~ Protect If Horsea is your primary concern, this is your go-to guy
Murkrow
#1 counter to both Abra and Exeggcute. It is the 3rd fastest unboosted Pokemon in the tournament, and turns anything resembling a Psychic-type or Grass-type into setup fodder. Example set: Murkrow @Chesto Berry EVs: 246 HP / 252 Speed / 14 Def w/ Timid nature ~ Calm Mind ~ Taunt ~ Hidden Power Dark ~ Rest Voltorb and Diglett are handy for this thing, just don't let it set up too much if you cannot revenge it.
Diglett
An amazing revenge killer, even without Arena Trap (although it would be very nice). While one of it's primary niches are not yet implemented, it still does what Diglett does best: revenge Example set: Diglett @Soft Sand EVs:4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Speed w/ Jolly nature ~ Earthquake ~ Rock Slide ~ Hidden Power Bug ~ Sunny Day / Rain Dance / Return As fun as it would be to use Sludge Bomb (!) to KO Exeggcute, it's natural defense is high enough to not get raped by it. The last slot can be used as a parting gift, while Return hits Koffing (lol).
Gastly
Although it is quite frail and does not compete with Abra or Murkrow in terms of Speed, Gastly is the only Pokemon of four in the entire tournament that is immune-none the less resists Explosion, has good 100 base Sp. Atk, can abuse Hypnosis, and can even use Explosion. Example set: Gastly @Silk Scarf EVs: 18 Atk / 244 Sp. Atk / 244 Speed w/ Hasty nature ~ Hypnosis / Taunt ~ Thunderbolt / Giga Drain ~ Hidden Power Ice / Hidden Power Fire / Psychic ~ Explosion Hidden Power Ice in the rain, and Hidden Power Fire in the sun. Once it's run it's life, go boom.
Sableye
While Sableye cannot abuse Prankster yet, it still stands as one of the four Pokemon to take nothing from Explosion. Sableye also has the gondsend of being immune to Psychic-type attacks, and having great Defense at the same time. Too add onto this, it can serve as a wonderful lead, as it can use Fake Out, set up weather, or just be a pain to leads like Meowth. Example set: Sableye @Leftovers EVs: 244 HP / 252 Def / 12 Sp. Def w/ Impish nature ~ Fake Out ~ Toxic / Brick Break ~ Sunny Day / Rain Dance ~ Shadow Ball Unlike Meowth, this lead has some staying power. This thing also has the added benefit of having no weaknesses, so keep your guard up against this. Without a Fighting-type move, you will almost always lose to Meowth 1 on 1, due to him using Taunt faster and spamming Shadow Ball, so Brick Break is worth considering, despite how out-of-place it might seem. And sure, you might want an Electric type to deal with it, but you can use Voltorb, Minun, or Plusle, all of whom are viable for more than Ch'ding counters. You've also go Pikachu, Mareep, Abra, and the obvious Cubone. Link to comment
