Tensions between the citizens of Kanto and Johto have reached a boiling point. A tournament has been created to settle the score once and for all. Which region is stronger, Kanto or Johto?

 

Date: Monday February 17

Time: 7PM EST/12AM GMT/4PM PST

Location: Silph Co Ch. 7

This event will use Tournament Mode for all battles. If you do not start your match in Tournament Mode you must timeout the match and restart it in Tournament Mode.

 

Banned Moves: Hyper Beam, Curse on Snorlax is banned

 

Banned Pokemon:  Wobbuffet

 

Event Specific Rules:

Players will be assigned a region once registration closes, this will include reserves.

Players must construct their team based on the pool for that region plus Pokemon that are in the middle.

Players may have no more than 2 Pokemon from the middle ground on their team.

This is a really fun idea, but I definitely see a huge advantage for Kanto teams, not only in number of choices but also the relative strength of those options. If you'll have a look at the OU Viability Thread, specifically look at the S and A Rank pokemon. You'll notice they're almost all Kanto pokemon, and those are really the main pokemon used in OU.

 

Without totally throwing everything out the window, the one thing that could really help balance this out would be to just add Hoenn to the mix of valid Johto pokemon. The balance would still probably be tipped in Kanto's favor, but not by such an extreme.

This is the exact reason that there is a middle ground. It exists solely to balance the relative strength of the pools so that one side does not have such a large advantage.
