[Denied]Channels by Age

Hoping to not get burned at the stake for suggesting this.

Can we have a few Channels that are age restricted?

I mean,  why would a 20-something want to be playing with

a 10 year old. (Aside maybe from Comps/Trades)

 

I'm just really starting to get turned off by the Channel chats.

It's obviously all younger kids with raging hormones and no

filter.

 

(Yes I know I can just ignore chat)

(Yes I know I can just go to a less populated Channel)

 

Thanks for those suggestions though.  

I know we have a decent amount of people over the age

of 20, and I would like to play a game with my peers,

not young kids who are all hitting on the same kid 

pretending to be a girl.

I just don't know how they will separate the channels like this. For all they know some 15 year olds might pretend to be 25 and get in an older channel. I don't think this suggestion is possible.

You register to make an account. You put in a birthday. Yea so what some teens will lie and say they are older. 

This would still get me away from the wave of elementary school students that are driving me nuts.

 

This would take a small amount of policing from the ever-present Mods/CM's .

I know with every suggestion there is a bunch of people just waiting

to shoot it down. Please don't. This game came out when I was 7-9. So I know

there is a large chunk of people my age playing this game... and if those people

want to play with a bunch of 9 year olds... Idk if I wanna play this game then anyway.

Yeah seems reasonable, just have to wait and see what the mods think about it now. I just didn't really think it was going to be possible. and not everyone wants to express there age.

not really needed since you could just block em (yay for longer block lists?) or just create a team with your friends and have a separate tab for team only

Waste of effort for something that can be easily bypassed.  I'm in my mid 20's I get along just fine with the younger kids here, in my experience it's the players my own age that cause the most problems.

would this not involve using a system that would inform every player of every other players age or age group? i see privacy concerns besides everything else that has been mentioned.

 

and ofc lots of people lie about their age and this system would encourage it to those concerned with their privacy.

I don't see how this can work unless the developers find some way to find out exactly how old a user is, otherwise they would just lie about their age and enter said channels which really defeats the purpose of this suggestion.

I want to thank everyone for their feedback.

I fully understand that this could not be enforced 100%. But having some guidelines set for something like

this WOULD deter people from entering the wrong channel.

 

I mean it IS against the rules to be posting trades in Global/Channel... But it happens all the time.

A simple wag of the finger from either a CM/Mod or polite individual usually keeps that in line.

 

For now I will stay on a less populated Channel and move around as I see fit.

 

So far the feedback to this has been-

 

People are gonna lie- 5

Going to need to implement a new system- 1

Privacy concerns- 2

 

People are gonna lie anyway... all the time... about everything.

 

They actually MAY need to work on a new system... which might

take a lot of dev time. So this to me is a good argument against

this idea.

 

Nothing is private on the internet.

I feel it is probably about time that a staff member commented on this suggestion. If I am correct, you are proposing that we split the channels into different age groups so that players can socialise with fellow players of the same age group. There are a few problems with this, the first and most prominent being that there is no way we could check that the age players give is correct. As previous posters have stated, a lot of young people using the internet lie about how old they are - if a 15 year old says they are 21 there is no way that we could prove any different. There is nothing stopping a younger player from making a new account and making themselves older so that they can access the mysterious "18+ Channel Chat". 

 

MMOs will always have a group of immature players that make themselves a nuisance in the public chats, it is our job to moderate against this - players concerned about this could always help us out by using the report function in game to alert us to any bad behaviour. Apologies in advance for generalising but from personal experience moderating in game chat for PokeMMO, I have found that it is usually the older players that are unfortunately disruptive in chat and it is the younger players who will whisper me to report it. Based on this I am not sure how much this situation would solve this problem. 

 

I would suggest that a way to avoid this type of chat, is to form or join a team that have like minded and mature players as members and use the team chat as your main form of communication in game. 

 

That being said, I don't feel that this suggestion is feasible so I will be closing this, but I appreciate the time you put into trying to find a proactive solution to this issue.
