  1. I think it would be useful if the OP could lock their own threads. Once they have their answer all they need to do is click lock and no one else would add to it (preventing it from being at the top of the forum longer than it need be). They should not however be able to unlock it. Also, OP's should be able to move their threads from where they originally made them (say someone accidentally made a suggestion in the guides forum, they could easily move it to the suggestion box as soon as they found out). The OP could also add their thread to 'Trash' at their discretion. If a mod/admin moves the thread though, the OP cannot move it again. This should help save a lot of the mods' time as they have to lock / move threads less. Footnote: searched for similar thread across all forums using keyword 'lock' - no relevant thread

  2. Rather than lock threads, just give everyone the ability to delete their own posts. OP deleting will delete the entire thread, of course.

  6. Hey guys, I thought some of you may enjoy a tutorial on how to edit the sprites inside of the Fire Red rom for use in your own hacks/patches for PokeMMO. The methods I use can be used to change Overworlds, Pokemon(front and back sprites), Trainers, Trainer back sprites, and much more, including how to alter the palettes of the sprites you're editing. Note: This tutorial was too image-heavy for this forum, so I had to post most of these images as links. Sorry! Things you'll need: Nameless Sprite Editor Classic (used for effective editing of overworlds) Nameless Sprite Editor 2.X (used for editing of everything else) A blank Fire Red rom MS Paint Gimp Time. This one is key :D So in this tutorial, I'll show you how to edit Red's regular trainer sprite. Using the method I use, you can change other things later. STEP ONE: Open up Nameless Sprite Editor 2.X and load your rom. After you click load, click on Trainer Sprites. Navigate to index 135. STEP TWO: Find or edit the sprite you would like to replace Red with and paste it into Paint. For this tutorial, I will be using Wally from Pokemon R/S/E. Zoom in with the magnifying glass tool, and use the paint bucket tool and make the background white. STEP THREE: Go back to Nameless Sprite editor (NSE). Now, hit CTRL and + a few times to zoom in on your Red sprite. Make sure your NSE window isn't maximized, as you will need to see your Wally sprite on the screen at the same time. Make sure you have your MS Paint image zoomed in on your new trainer sprite and move Paint to one side of your screen. Make sure NSE is open on the other side of the screen, also zoomed in, like so: In NSE, click the Palette Button. You will see the colors of the sprite you are currently working with. The first color, that teal one there, is the background color. You don't change that one. Notice the two shades of red in this palette. This is important for PokeMMO, as these two are the colors the client changes when a character is a color other than red in-game. In any other sprite, that's not as important, but with editing either the Red or Green trainer sprite, it is. Because I'm editing Wally, he's going to have red hair. Why? Because of the limited palette, and when it's in-game, his hair will be the color the player chose for their character to be. Wally is only a test subject in this case, ladies and gentlemen! STEP FOUR: Here's where we actually edit the palette! Notice in the bottom of the Palette box the "Edit Current" option. Click on the "+" to the right of it and you'll see some options. First off, we're going to match Wally's skin tone with his sprite instead of Red's. In this part, refer to the image as you follow the steps. 1: click on the lighter skin tone. We'll edit this first. 2: Use the eye dropper tool by clicking and holding, notice you can move out of the Nameless Sprite Editor window and it will pick up on any color you choose. So while still holding the button down, release your click over the lightest skin tone on Wally's face. 3: Click the button. Notice that Red's skin changed color! Now repeat this step for his mid-tone skin color and his dark, or outline color. Your Red sprite should now look like this: http://i50.tinypic.com/4hbipj.png STEP FIVE: Now in Nameless Sprite Editor click on File>Export>Export Bitmap. Save it in a folder called "Red" for now, and name it Red.bmp . Now, navigate to your Red folder and open up Red.bmp in Gimp (once Gimp is installed, just right click the bitmap and click "Edit with GIMP". Once Gimp is open, adjust your window size and zoom in so you can see what you're doing. Now go to Edit>Copy and switch over to Paint. Paste the image near to Wally. You can erase everything around Wally except for his actual trainer sprite for now. http://i48.tinypic.com/4hcev7.png Replace Wally's Green shades with Red's... well, red. You can do this by using the Eyedropper tool and making Color Selection One the light color of Wally's hair, and change your color 2 to the light color of Red's hat. Use the eraser tool, and RIGHT CLICK AND DRAG over Wally. Just like that, his hair has some red in it! http://i48.tinypic.com/i73kg6.png Repeat this step with the next darker green and next darker red. On the last shade of green, use the darkest brown Red has for his skin tone(because he shares it with his hat). Because the wally sprite uses an unusual 4 shades to one color instead of the normal 3, make the final shade into black. http://i45.tinypic.com/9l99bs.png Next is his pants! Follow the same steps above, but use the shades of blue available to you instead. You may want to change his shoes to a different color beforehand, though. Once done, you should have something like this: http://i48.tinypic.com/2gtcbcj.png STEP SIX: By this point we're making major progress, only a few more things to do. Now, since Wally's other colors are close enough to Red's, the palette Red has should recognize them. Copy your Wally sprite and paste it into the GIMP file you opened that your Red sprite was open in. It will look like this: http://i48.tinypic.com/286u9ad.png So first use the crop tool and click outside the selection area, and then just use the eyedropper tool to take the teal/green background color and use the paint bucket to fill in that white, and use the pencil tool to get rid of the rest of Red's hand and in my case, the few foot pixels at the bottom. http://i47.tinypic.com/28ukww9.png Now that the background is filled in, you can see that there is some of that teal/green background color inside Wally's shirt. That means if it's put in-game like that, those parts will be transparent. It's not a big deal though, it's fixable :) You will run into errors like this occasionally, and it's best to know how to deal with them. First go to your toolbox window and select the pencil. Drag the "size" bar down from 20 to 1, and change the brush to the one pixel box. http://i45.tinypic.com/2uz4f4g.png Select the Eyedropper tool again and choose a color, like one of the shades of blue, and fill those teal pixels in. You will most likely need to zoom in again to do this. Add some blue to where the outline went missing if you feel like it. (Remember, when you're doing this for your own project, you'll have more creative leniency!) http://i49.tinypic.com/24ffkts.png STEP SEVEN: It's ready to be inserted into the game now! Your next step is to go to File>Export and save it as something in your Red folder. Now go back to Nameless Sprite Editor and go to File>Import>Import Sprite Data and click load. Select your Wally image and click save. You'll notice your Red sprite changed into your Wally sprite. Now click File>Save and the save data window will pop up. When you're doing this in the future and if it won't save because it says your image is too big, click the magifying glass button on this window and let it repoint. http://i45.tinypic.com/2qn9iqd.png In this case, it's not any bigger, so just go ahead and save. CONGRATULATIONS! You just edited a palette and inserted your first trainer sprite into Pokemon Fire Red! Now copy that over to your PokeMMO/rom folder and login. Notice your character on the characters screen has changed! http://i47.tinypic.com/2hia2rl.png BACKSPRITES AND OVERWORLDS: To change the backsprites, simply load your rom into NSE 2.X and click Navigate, BPRE, and backsprites. Follow the same guide as above, but keep in mind that PokeMMO only changes 2 colors now instead of 3 (only the two red tones). For Overworlds, load your rom into NSE CLASSIC. The only difference with this is that the palette editing is slightly different. You still use the eyedropper and drag across the screen to select a color, but this time you need to click on the numbers instead of the actual color in the palette box. You can find your palette editor under Edit>Palette. If you used this tutorial, PLEASE comment and tell me what you thought!

  7. My second suggestion I shall be making in this section. Ok, so being a CM usually means a lot of questions are thrown in my direction - (I must stress at this point, that it is indeed my job to answer them, and I am not complaining about doing so. I very much enjoy it.) As more and more users join the game, the more questions are brought up. The current solution to this problem is the FAQ tab, accessed by using H. My solution to this problem, is the Teachy TV; An item which existed in FireRed/LeafGreen, and for the sole purpose of helping new players. After accessing it, a menu with a series of helpful guides would pop up, with questions related to what the player wanted to learn; After choosing one of the questions, an animation would play out, teaching the player how to play the game in relation to that question. Here is a video example; My idea of course, would be to implement the Teachy TV into PokeMMO, but along with some of the existing tutorials, which could be read straight from the ROM, others would need to be scripted to fit around certain questions that would exist within PokeMMO. Such as how to fly, How to make Pokemon follow you, etc. etc. Now, another idea I had would be to have someone record a playthrough of the game, in seperate parts, and one of the Teachy TV's "Questions" or "Features" would be to play these videos in-game through the use of a built in video player. Again, I know this is all a hassle to code, and may not happen/would be a long way off. But I really believe this to be a permanent solution. Now to questions you may have about the idea: - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How will players get the Teachy TV? My idea would be to have your Mother give the Teachy TV to all new players just before they exit the house. With the dialogue along the lines of; "PlayerName! Don't forget this! Prof.Oak told me to give to give to you as a young aspiring trainer." -PlayerName Obtains TeachyTV- "Good luck Honey! You can use the Teachy TV by -Insert whatever method of using the TeachyTV is here- Oh! And don't forget to visit RivalName's Sister, I hear she has a spare Town Map for you!" This should eliminate numerous problems, the questions of how to use it, and helps those players who forget to pick up a Town Map to use fly later on in the game. And of course older Players can revisit their Mother to get the Teachy TV also, after that she will return to her usual dialogue, and healing your Pokemon. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How will the Teachy TV be accessed? Well, my initial though would be to put it down on the bottom right hand corner, near the Game Menu, and also have it accessed via a hotkey. Either way, it is important that your Mother explains how it is accessed when she first gives it to you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please Note: - All of the other questions that exist within the TeachyTV could also be videos played through a video player, instead of scripted events. - The Teachy TV questions could easily be edited to help answer the questions that are relevant to the existence of PokeMMO at that time. - If the questions are done via video, members of the community could chip in, and help create them. (Again, down to the devs) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok now that's out of the way - One last thing; There exists a sign in Pokemon FireRed, and also PokeMMO in Pallet Town, that reads; "Trainer Tips: Press START to open the Menu!" Since Start does not exist in PokeMMO. It could easily be replaced with one of these three options; "Trainer Tips: Press H to open the FAQ!" or "Trainer Tips: Press (Insert Hotkey) to open the Game Settings!" or "Trainer Tips: Press (Insert Hotkey) to use the Teachy TV!" I think I've written everything down, if not - I'll add to it later. Let me know what you think of the idea. ~Darkshade EDIT: Also a better title name for the thread might be "Teachy TV - A better HELP solution?" Thankyou for reading.

  9. Okay guys, I was playing Pokemon Showdown and getting a few tips of good Pokemon from the Rate My Team section of Smogon. If this was added it could really benefit people that are looking to get into competitive Pokemon as they can gain strategies and ideas for good Pokemon. I have searched The Suggestion Box for "rate my team section" and "team ratings" and I could not find anything.

  11. Thanks! Yeah I had no problem with my backsprites once I figured out my palette issue. I not sure what the problem is with yours as I've never encountered it. Some idea is it could be a corrupted ROM (less likely since you edited the overworld sprites) or you could have a corrupted nse2.1/ missing some dll files. Have you tried re-downloading the program?

  32. What he said. The friends chat won't do what the flagging will do, and the flagging won't do what the friends' chat won't do. There shouldn't be a debate about which option should be implemented because of which one is more efficient, as they do completely different things and shouldn't be compared. This suggestion is a very good suggestion and deserves to be implemented in my honest opinion. The same goes for the friends chat tab. But I believe there are tons of threads about it as well, si it is being discussed over there. But still, I think the game needs both.

    New Game+

So I was playing at 2:30 am, and I was just about to reset my game when I realized: "What if PokeMMO had a New Game+ option?" What would it be? An option which could be activated at any time from the character select screen which would simply reset your character's progress through the game. Removing Key Items, Badges, and HMs. You would keep your pokemon, money and usable items, and simply start the story over in Pallet Town with the same character. What Would this Accomplish? 1) Reduce the number of characters people have to create to farm TMs and story pokemon such as Eevee and Lapras. This would likely be a problem if there were more players, because of the somewhat limited amount of "good" character names. 2) Allow players in glitched game sessions to start from the beginning without losing everything. 3) Provide a renewable source of TMs for players. 4) Allow players to keep the same handle/character name between sessions for easier friends list management. In Regards To Starters: If players were given an option to start the game over and choose a different starter, this would likely cause a huge number of good nature/high IV/shiny starters being added to the game. Is this a problem? I think once breeding is implemented it would already be lost as an issue. However, potential solutions could include: 1) Only allow players to get a new starter pokemon after completing all 8 gyms (or alternately other checkpoints in the game) 2) Flat out not let players choose a new starter pokemon when using the "New Game+" option.
