Fighters "How did you fight the Elite Four?" "What's the best team for the Elite Four?" "Is this a good Pokémon to use?" The Elite Four is less about having a good counter team and more about knowing how the AI will react to the team you already have. I've made a list of teams that you might consider when fighting them. I haven't tested these teams against the Elite Four but on paper they should work. Use your knowledge of basic match ups to decide who to throw into a fight. Spoiler The Cheese Team Potential: ★★★★★ Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ Risk: ★★★★★ Spoiler Jonathan (Level ??) Ability: ??? Endeavor, Sucker Punch Strategy Send out your Gastlys first and your Rattata last. The Gastlys should be weak enough that they can only survive one turn (two with a Focus Sash). Have them use Destiny Bond on their first turn. If they are defeated by a direct attack from the enemy (indirect damage comes from burns, sandstorms, poison, etc.) before their next turn, they will take the opponent down with them. You'll do this with all your Gastlys so that the final battle is a one on one between your Rattata and the last opponent. Rattata's first move should be to use Endeavor. If your opponent is faster and strong enough, Rattata's health will drop to 1. Endeavor makes your opponent's health equal to yours, so you'll both be at one HP. The second move is to use Sucker Punch, thus defeating the opposing team. Recommendations Give your Gastlys as many 0 IVs as possible. The lower their stats, the more you can be certain they'll faint during their second turn. Prevent your Gastlys from evolving. See the previous recommendation for an explanation. Teach your Gastlys Night Shade and Sucker Punch just in case you need to revive one. Make your Rattatas fast as possible. See con #3 for an explanation. You can minimize the last two cons if you level your Gastlys enough to survive two or three hits from an opponent. Should a secondary effect prevent them from using a move, you still have enough health left to heal and try again. This can stop you from needing to buy Focus Sashes as well. Pros Simple and clean. The team takes no forethought to use. You don't have to be an experienced player to use them nor do you have to worry about in-depth strategies. Either the team works or it doesn't. Cons Costly. The price of a revive is 3,250 Poké. You'll need 25 revives which will cost 81,250 Poké. You'll also need to buy Focus Sashes and potions to fully heal your team. Without an Amulet Coin, the Elite Four will reward you about 65,600 Poké and 2,000 Battle Points. You can try buying & selling Battle Point items (such as Choice Scarf/Band/Specs, vitamins, Life Orbs) or finding other healing items to try and offset the cost, but if you use this team, you aren't using it to farm money. Same order. Using this team means that the Elite Four will throw out the same Pokémon in the same order each time, so any team that can defeat this team once will always defeat them. Higher priority moves/faster Pokémon with similar priority moves. As a move with increased priority, Sucker Punch will act first unless a move with higher priority or a move with equal priority used by a Pokémon faster than Rattata is used. Herein lies the risk of this team. Because you are relying solely on the priority of Sucker Punch, any Pokémon that has a move with the same priority but is faster or any Pokémon with a higher priority move will outspeed your Rattata and defeat it. If the last Pokémon has a move that can be used before Sucker Punch, then you'll lose to that team every time. The only thing you can do is use a different team to defeat that Elite Four member. Secondary effects. If a Pokémon faster than Gastly or Rattata uses a move like Waterfall whose secondary effect can prevent the use of a move, the strategy will fall apart. Item: ??? ???, ???, ???, ???, ???, ??? ???, ???, ???, ??? Strategy The focus of this team is Pelipper. At the time of writing this strategy, players cannot have hidden abilities even though NPCs may. This makes Pelipper the only Pokémon accessible to players that has the ability Drizzle, an ability which causes a rainstorm for 5 turns when the Pokémon with it appears in battle. This rainstorm can be extended to 8 turns by giving Pelipper a Damp Rock to hold. The purpose of using Drizzle is to activate certain abilities that will give you an edge in battle. The abilities affected by rain are: Dry Skin (regain ⅛ of total health at the end of each round) Forecast (Castform will turn into a Water type) Hydration (cures Burn, Frozen, Paralysis, Sleep, and Poison at the end of each round) Rain Dish (restores 1/16 of total health at the end of each round), and Swift Swim (doubles the Pokémon's speed). Additionally, Thunder and Hurricane will always hit, Weather Ball becomes a Water type move, Solar Beam does 1/2 damage, Moonlight, Synthesis, and Morning Sun only restore 1/4 of maximum health, Water moves will deal 50% increased damage, and Fire attacks will deal 50% less damage. If we look at all the max evolution Pokémon who have obtainable abilities which are affected by the rain, you can have 21 (2 Dry Skin, 1 Forecast, 3 Hydration, 1 Rain Dish, 14 Swift Swim) unique Pokémon. Each of the links in the previous sentence go directly to the Pokémon who can learn these abilities. You can build a team that outspeeds or outlasts the opponent depending on who you take. You can learn more about rain teams using one of two rain team guides at Smogon. Recommendations Kabutops and Kingdra can outspeed most opponents with their Swift Swim abilities activated. They perform excellently as sweepers given how hard they hit. If you manage to find a way to set up Kabutops' Swords Dance, you can eliminate the enemy team rather quickly. Of the 21 Pokémon listed, only 4 don't have a water typing. Try to balance out your team by using Pokémon other than those with the aforementioned abilities. Switch out Pelipper at the beginning of each round or use U-Turn. In the event the battle lasts longer than 8 turns, you want to make sure you can still bring out the rain. If you have a Pokémon that knows Rain Dance, you can keep it battle so long as the Rain Dance user lasts long enough to use it. Pros Speed. A team of Swift Swimmers can outspeed most opponents with ease, giving you priority in each battle. Fire protection. With the rain in effect, Pokémon such as Ferrothorn who have 4x weakness to Fire attacks can be used more safely. Cons Lack of diversity. As previously mentioned, only 4 of the 21 Pokémon with abilities affected by rain aren't Water types. This gives a blaring weakness to Electric and Grass moves most of the time. Additionally, many of the Pokémon with the Swift Swim abilities don't have much diversity in their moveset either. Item: ??? ???, ???, ???, ???, ???, ??? ???, ???, ???, ??? Strategy This is where my bias begins to show. I've always had difficulty using slower teams. Planning to take one hit I can do, but knowing the enemy will almost always be faster than you? This team requires you to outlast your opponent rather than out speed them. Tyranitar is one of three available Pokémon with the ability Sand Stream, the other two being Hippowdon and Gigalith. With it, anytime the Pokémon enters battle, a sandstorm will kick up. The sandstorm lasts for five turns and can be extended to eight turns if the Pokémon is holding a Smooth Rock. The purpose of using Sand Stream is to activate certain hidden abilities that will give you an edge in battle. The abilities affected by a sandstorm are: Sand Force (Rock, Ground, & Steel moves deal 30% additional damage) Sand Rush (doubles the Pokémon's speed), and Sand Veil (decreases accuracy of moves against Pokémon with this ability to ⅘) Additionally, any Pokémon that doesn't have one of these abilities and isn't a Steel, Rock, or Ground-type will take 1/16 of its max health each turn. Rock-types gain an additional 50% Special Defense, Weather Ball becomes a Rock-type move, Solar Beam/Blade deal half damage, & Moonlight, Synthesis, & Morning Sun only recover ¼ of max health. If we look at all the max evolution Pokémon who have obtainable abilities which are affected by the sandstorm, you can have 7 (1 Sand Force, 2 Sand Rush, 4 Sand Veil) unique Pokémon. Each of the links in the previous sentence go directly to the Pokémon who can learn these abilities. You can learn more about sandstorm teams using the sandstorm guide at Smogon. Recommendations Drillbur is an exceptionally strong Pokémon who has access to both Sand Force & Sand Rush. With a high attack and high speed, it can fit your needs as a sweeper or hard hitter depending on which ability you give it. Rhyperior provides an excellent tank if bred correctly. With its ability, Solid Rock (damage from super effective moves reduced to ¾), it'll help reduce some of the threats which face your team. Switch out your Sand Stream Pokémon at the beginning of battle. If the battle lasts longer than your sandstorm, you'll want to make sure you can summon it again. Alternatively, if you have a Pokémon with the move Sandstorm, you can use them instead assuming they aren't defeated before they can act. Pros No need for speed. If you use this team, you're probably less worried about outspeeding the opponent and engaging in a battle of attrition. That means you don't have to worry if they somehow manage to outspeed your fastest Pokémon. You have time to set up the arena with traps or chip away at your opponent's health. Continual damage. While it may seem small, constant damage from a sandstorm can add up in prolonged battles. Adding entry level hazards like Spikes (⅛ max health damage with one use, ⅙ max health damage with two uses, and ¼ max health damage with three uses), Toxic Spikes (inflicts poison with one use or badly poisoned with two uses), or Stealth Rock (damage ranges from 3.125% to 50% of max health based on effectiveness of Rock attacks against the opponent's type) can increase the chip away damage. Damage resistance. Many of the Pokémon with abilities affected by sandstorms are either Rock or Steel types, both of which naturally have high Defense stats and many resistances. If you're going for a tanky team, there are only weaknesses you have to worry about. Cons Lack of diversity. As stated, there are only seven unique combinations of Pokémon and abilities affected by Sandstorms, two of which are Drillbur. This doesn't necessarily mean you have to choose from these seven alone. Again, try to find Pokémon which balance whatever team you make. Your team doesn't have to be comprised solely of Pokémon with a sandstorm-effected ability. Steel types like Magnezone can provide a bit of diversity. Item: ??? ???, ???, ???, ???, ???, ??? ???, ???, ???, ??? Strategy Like Splash Town, this team has a single Pokémon as its focal point: Torkoal. As the only obtainable Pokémon with the ability Drought (causes harsh sunlight for five turns), Torkoal is a necessity for this team to work. The harsh sunlight can be extended by giving Torkoal a Heat Rock to hold. The purpose of using Drought is to activate certain hidden abilities that will give you an edge in battle. The abilities affected by harsh sunlight are: Chlorophyll (doubles Pokémon's speed) Dry Skin (Pokémon loses ⅛ of max health each turn) Flower Gift (increases Attack and Special Defense of the Pokémon with this ability and its allies) Forecast (transforms Castform into a Fire type) Leaf Guard (prevents status effects), and Solar Power (increases Special Attack by 50% but causes the Pokémon to lose ⅛ max health each turn). Additionally, Thunder and Hurricane have an accuracy of 50% instead of 70%, Weather Ball becomes a Fire type move, Solar Beam can be used instantly rather than charging for a round, Moonlight, Synthesis, and Morning Sun restore ⅔ max health rather than ⅓, Growth raises Attack and Special Attack by two stages, Pokémon cannot be frozen, Fire moves will deal 50% increased damage, and Water attacks will deal 50% less damage. If we look at all the max evolution Pokémon who have obtainable abilities which are positively affected by the harsh sunlight, you can have 18 (11 Chlorophyll, 1 Forecast, 1 Flower Gift, 3 Leaf Guard, & 2 Solar Power) unique Pokémon. Each of the links in the previous sentence go directly to the Pokémon who can learn these abilities. Recommendations The Beach team allows for a lot of diversity. Use that. Make a team where no three members share a type. Switch Torkoal out of battle as soon as you can. In the event the fight lasts longer than your sunlight, you'll want to have it available to bring the sun again. Alternatively, you can keep it in battle if you have another Pokémon who can use Sunny Day before they're defeated. Pros Diversity. All Fire type Pokémon gain an additional boost to their STAB moves while fighting in this team. Several Grass Pokémon have the ability Chlorophyll so they can outspeed your Water opponents. Unlike the other teams, this team actually has a large roster to choose from. There are obtainable Pokémon who learn powerful Fire type moves without actually being Fire types. This means you can still benefit from the team even if Torkoal is your only Fire type Pokémon. Cons Chlorophyll users are Grass types. The primary ability affected in this team is Chlorophyll. Because every Pokémon with the ability is a Grass type, the sunshine will actually make it easier for them to be defeated. You'll have to be mindful of who you send out against whom. Make sure your Chlorophyll users can either survive a hit or defeat the enemy in a single one. The Snow Resort Potential: ★★★☆☆ Difficulty: ★★★☆☆ Risk: ★★★☆☆ Spoiler Vanilluxe or Abomasnow (Level ??) The Elite Four None of the Elite Four seem to remember what their types are since several teams only have one Pokémon of their type. The genders don't stay the same even if it's the same team, the order in which the Pokémon are kept in their Pokéballs changes, & several Pokémon share the same moves across different team sets. It should be noted that a Pokémon on a certain team will almost always use the same move against the same Pokémon. For example, if Bruno 1's Staraptor uses Close Combat against my Rattata, it will almost always use Close Combat against my Rattata every time it sees it unless prohibited by a Choice item. Fighting one team doesn't mean you'll fight the same team across all leaders. That is to say, fighting Lorelei 1 doesn't guarantee you'll fight Lance 1. Unlike the gym leaders, the teams will sometimes change even if you haven't defeated the champion. With all that said, allow me to introduce the format for the Elite Four. RedactedColour
Lorelei - General Advice Spoiler Lorelei's ace is Lapras. Some of her Lapras' focus on special attack while others focus on attack. If you see a (special/physical) attack, you know that Lapras has only (special/physical) moves. They aren't particularly fast but they have high health and access to a STAB priority move, Ice Shard, thus making it annoying to sweep them. RedactedColour
Bruno - General Advice Spoiler Bruno's ace is Machamp. Most, if not all, of the Machamps seem to have the ability No Guard, meaning attacks from or against them will never miss. Use this to your advantage as Bruno certainly will. A Machamp's Dynamic Punch will always confuse your Pokémon. Fortunately they aren't very fast, so try to take them down before they have the chance to strike. Bruno cherishes Electric types, specifically Electivire & Eelektross. When dealing with the latter, ignore the type effectiveness advice the game offers. RedactedColour
Agatha - General Advice Spoiler Agatha's ace is Gengar. Gengars are notorious for their speed. They are, however, glass cannons. If you can't outspeed them, engage in a battle of attrition. One or two hits should take them down. Additionally, ignore the game's type effectiveness advice. Most Gengars have the ability Levitate, making them immune to Ground attacks, not weak to them. Agatha enjoys using Rotoms and Dark type Pokémon. Many of her teams have a different Rotom form somewhere on them. Ignore what the game's type effectiveness tells you. All Rotoms are immune to Ground attacks due to their ability. Furthermore, the game's type effectiveness advice won't tell you which moves are truly effective against each individual form. Make sure you know what you're fighting. RedactedColour
Additional Information I want to help. What can I do? Convince the mods to give me a Ditto with Imposter. Do I get more money for fighting one team as opposed to another? No. The money earned is the same no matter which team you face. What's the difference between a Pokémon with ??? for their item or ability as opposed to --- or an actual item or ability? --- means that the Pokémon doesn't have an item. A Pokémon with ??? for its Ability, item, or move has an unknown Ability, item, or move. Why do the Hidden Powers have (Type?) after them? When Eve transforms, she doesn't copy the opponent's hidden power. As such, I can't say for certain that an opponent's hidden power is a specific type. I can only say what it most likely is based on which of my Pokémon it's super effective against. You've made a mistake. (Pokémon) can't learn (move). Some Pokémon have moves that they shouldn't be able to learn according to their Gen 7 learnset on Bulbapedia. If I have a move listed it is because I've seen it or Eve has copied it. You've made a grammatical or spelling error. Thank you. Please tell me where it is so that I can fix it. I'm the type of person who corrects other people's grammar or spelling so I'd like this guide to be as error free as possible. Can't you just assume that a Pokémon has the same speed, Ability, or move across different teams for the same leader? I have observed that different teams from the same leader may have slightly different movesets, items, & abilities even if they have the same Pokémon. How long did it take to make this guide? I began this guide on March 30th, 2019. It's still in progress but it's taking me a while to complete due to lack of free time. What inspired you to make this? I farm the Elite Four for money & battle points. There weren't any guide that mentioned all their items, abilities, or moves, so I'm making one. I think it would be nice to one day have a team of players pooling their resources together to research things like exact encounter rates, Elite Four teams, and more. If you have all the tools you need then why post the guide before it's completed? It's easier to update as I go along than to keep all the information to myself and then post it. What was the most difficult part of making the guide? There are multiple teams with the same Pokémon and same item. It's frustrating not being able to tell them apart at a glance. The Pokémon don't even remain the same gender even if you're fighting the same team. Will there be a guide for other regions? I've already made a guide for Kanto gym leaders & Hoenn gym leaders. Do you still play PokéMMO? Yes. My IGN used to be Shadowthiefdark but now it's Redacted. Your team sucks. My team could easily defeat yours. Congratulations, (insert name here). You must be the pride and joy of (insert hometown here). Edited October 12, 2019 by RedactedColour Updated additional info. Bestfriends 1 Link to comment

RedactedColour
Thank you. Now that my Hoenn guide is nearly complete, I think I'll start tackling the Kanto Elite Four. Bestfriends 1 Link to comment
Trevor
You can find a complete chart by clicking here, for fighting with the elite four. I hope that you find it useful. Link to comment
Archiver
So, I don't know if you're still making this guide or not but I've also been keeping track of what teams the Kanto E4 uses too. And honestly, it seems like it chooses from a big pool. Comparing my list and yours on just Lorelei I only encountered 3 of the 12 teams you listed and the rest were completely different. Right now if I add my list and yours she has at least 20 teams to choose from. So yeah, just letting you know, I guess. If you still care or not. Spoiler Here's Lorelei using 2 Lucarios, which isn't in the list. Link to comment
RedactedColour
Thanks, @Archiver. My progress has slowed but I'll look into this. So far I keep getting these same teams, so at the very least I can document these. Edited October 11, 2019 by RedactedColour Link to comment
