PVP Randoms Tournaments

NeemaW

Question

Hello,
I am pretty new to pokemmo only starting last month and having a little over 150 hours in my character. One thing I have noticed (because it has been my goal since day 2 of playing) is that pvp is a very expensive thing to get into. When I found out about randoms I fell in love with the game even more and Im confident to say that it is one of the reasons I am still playing/have played so much of this game. Although I am trying to still save up for an OU comp team (which will cost me millions and many more hours to farm without buying RP), I noticed there are no randoms pvp tournaments. As much as I love randoms pvp it can get exhausting overtime and I notice many of the people I met don't really return to it as much after creating an OU/NU/UU team (because of their investment). Although I know everyone is not like this, I believe hosting randoms pvp tournaments would be the highest participating tournament the game has ever seen. Not only will it be highly participated, it will give new players yet another reason to stick around as randoms takes no investment. Although the most skillful player probably wont be the winner of the tournament, I believe it will be really fun for everyone participating and help retain new players who feel as if other pvp is too grindy/ too far out for them. I believe randoms tournaments will be a little more high stake / competitive for people who are looking more than to just stake their elo.

For those who not trying to read all that, Im saying randoms pvp tournaments would be really fun please upvote I haven't met a single person who disagrees.

Thanks.

Random tournaments are great but I feel this will kill the incentive to play the actual competitive tiers even more.

For example, you would need to introduce a minimum of 2-3 automated random tournaments a week, which means that one or more of the OU/UU/NU/DUBS tournaments will need to be replaced, and most of these have already died down a lot on ladder and during certain timezones.

Not to mention that unlike the other tiers, randoms is basically luck based on your match up and many people have access to all of the sets for each Pokemon meaning that they're already going to be at an advantage.

So although a cool incentive, I'd rather these were hosted unofficially. We need more people to invest in actual tiers, not to sway away from them.

You brought up some very valid points but in the end I have to disagree. I dont believe the randoms tournaments need to be hosted as much as the other tiers and like you said randoms is basically luck which will in the end bring people who give it a try to other tiers. I believe having these randoms tournaments once every week or every other week (without getting rid of other ones) is a great idea because as much as I want people to invest in other tiers its not feasible for most players who dont spend irl money. To get comp pokemons even just the 3x31 in required stats is a big money investment that most newer players wont have for hundreds of hours unless they are doing extremely efficient farming. As someone who started a month ago with 150 hours, I just hit my first million after grinding nonstop while watching tv shows. Even with this million im not sure if It will be enough to fully create the pvp team of my dreams, let alone one that would even win a match in a tournament where everyone is running 6x31 iv.

I believe these random tournaments would bring people who have not given pvp a real try (besides a few randoms ranked games) into pvp and make them more competitive about it, eventually leading to them joining the other tiers.

At the moment those other tiers of pvp are really closed off to veterans who know almost all moves of the games, which even I admit I have no clue of most of them, but the ones I have learned are from randoms pvp.

You made valid points and I'm not saying they are wrong, I just still think the benefits outweigh the consequences (If there would even be any).
I wouldnt want the randoms pvp tournament to take the slot of any other tournaments but add an additional slot with these random tournaments.

If they are hosted unoffically it would just not have the same reach.

The goal is to reel in as many pve players into pvp and randoms tournaments would be perfect and give a reason for people to grind and learn randoms.

@Imperial
I'm not sure of the state of the other tiers atm, but I do know that a good reason (besides money) that many people stay away is lack of knowledge of the many moves and Pokemon, so the more people reeled in by randoms tournaments, the more likely they are to be incentivized to try a tier thats not random and pure luck like you said. (as they learn more about pvp)

I do 100%  believe at the very least it is worth a one-time tournament test just to see the community response.
(also ik people make 400k a day doing gym reruns but me and a decent amount of ppl i met dont really like gym reruns, especially the more pvp orientated folk)

I agree the grinding is a pain but unfortunately this is an MMO and it involves grinding, compared to other games it isn't so bad. Compared to earlier years there's more efficient ways to make money now (e.g. Gym runs earning you 300-400k an hour per account, berry farming, elite four runs, ev/breeding services etc). A budget competitive team would set you back around 1.8-2m, with a perfect competitive team being around 4.2-4.5m. Luckily there are multiple events happening each year so that's the perfect opportunity to grind and most people earn a good few million so this shouldn't be an issue long-term.

I believe these random tournaments would bring people who have not given pvp a real try (besides a few randoms ranked games) into pvp and make them more competitive about it, eventually leading to them joining the other tiers.

Unfortunately randoms is completely different to competitive tiers like OU, UU, NU, DUBS. For example, you aren't able to theorymon, a huge aspect of the game. You aren't able to work out customised spreads and synergy cores to identify and handle common or particular threats, and you don't get that additional experience of trying to scout and CT your opponent, using calcs to determine outcomes etc.

At the moment those other tiers of pvp are really closed off to veterans who know almost all moves of the games, which even I admit I have no clue of most of them, but the ones I have learned are from randoms pvp.

OU is the most accessible tier for new players, primarily because it's the most stable meaning players won't have to purchase as many competitive Pokemon (UU and NU are the most unstable because of constant tier shifts) and also because it's extremely easy to get a game, meaning that it's easier to learn from your battles.

You made valid points and I'm not saying they are wrong, I just still think the benefits outweigh the consequences (If there would even be any).

I just feel that it will clutter all of the tournaments and it isn't recognised as an 'official tier' by the staff like Little Cup, Monotype, etc.

The goal is to reel in as many pve players into pvp and randoms tournaments would be perfect and give a reason for people to grind and learn randoms.

I disagree here as randoms is more for casual playing and doesn't really give you that knowledge and experience I mentioned above to dive into competitive tiers.

Randoms is completely different to the other tiers for the reason I mentioned above. I think the best approach is for players to join teams and borrow competitive Pokemon, diving straight into the tier they want to play as the more exposure they receive, the more they learn and improve.

I personally gym run and as grinding as it is, it's probably the most efficient method of money making outside of events and GTL flipping (if you're rich).
