[OU Discussion] Arena Trap/Dugtrio (Dugtrio Banned to Ubers)

The point is we ban pokemon when pokemon are too strong and moves/abilities items when moves are they are detrimental to competition. Baton Pass is one of those moves. Arena Trap is one of those abilities. Dragon Claw is not: it's just an attack and the reason it's so good on Salamence is because Salamence has the typing, stats etc. to back it up, not just because Dragon Claw.

Okay but didn't you say baton pass was basically useless on eevee? Its not just about stab or the whole poke in general it's about what some can do with that move and others cannot. Same goes with the ability. Flygons Stan dclaw hurts a lot but it isn't the same as the other two. Just like the ability in this case. Dugtrio can abuse it but it's harder for diglett and especially trapinch. That is where I am seeing the grey area.

The point is that it's the move/ability that's uncompetitive not just "OP" allowing the move/ability at all gives players a chance to short-circuit the rules of comp. pokemon (switching, strategy, etc.) in order to get easy kills that eliminate their opponent's choice in the matter.

It seems there's no argument left to keep dugtrio in ou.

Calcs have clearly shown how diglett would be the exact same thing, so i dare anyone to say it wouldn't be a problem to the tier.

Trapinch is clearly unable to trap anything other than chansey and umbreon, other than that it's a wasted slot.

What exactly is still keeping us from banning the ability? trapinch?

This needs to be solved asap, the tier is an unbearable stallfest

The Tier Council has unanimously voted to ban Dugtrio to Ubers (7-0)

 

Arena Trap has long been a controversial aspect of the metagame and its primary abuser, Dugtrio, has come to be a common and effective teammate for many OU teams. Among popular team archetypes, Stall can abuse Dugtrio's ability to trap the tier's best wallbreakers, Offense can abuse its capacity to trap Chansey & Porygon2 to clear the way for special sweepers and Balance can rely on either or both of the above, as well counter-trapping Magneton to make Steel type walls even more effective.

 

Dugtrio's ability allows it to freely trap many pokemon in OU and because of this teams can be designed with the assumption that Dugtrio can perform its role effectively. This often allows players to make poor plays with lopsided teams and still come out victorious using Dugtrio as a trump card for the part of the metagame that they beat. Since Dugtrio can stop Ursaring, Heracross, Metagross and a number of other less prominent Physical sweepers, it often patches up the downsides of using Chansey over another special wall, leading the metagame to become even more centered around trapping it to allow teams to sweep.

 

Arena Trap shall not be banned. We will however, be levying quick bans against Trapinch/Diglett should they become used and effective in the OU metagame.

Dugtrio has been banned to Ubers on the basis of Support Characteristic.
