    [OU Discussion] Gengar

So after losing to a gengar for the umpteenth time and instead of just sulking and being salty about it, I have decided to create this so that I could actually discuss with the whole community on their stance on gengar. While it's understandable that people will have some sort of bias when it comes to this discussion, I really hope that the bias won't cloud your judgement. So I'm just gonna go ahead and use Craig's layout for creating discussion threads since he's had a lot of success in banning things, gonna hope it works this time too *fingers crossed* Viable Sets The sets I'll be mentioning are probably the ones that are potentially the most threatening. If I am forgetting a set or if you feel that there could be a better alternative to one of the moves I provide in the set, feel free to post it. Perish Trapper Perish Song Mean Look Remaining two moves can be rotated around sub / disable / protect / wow. This gengar has the ability to perish trap almost any wall out there and the unpredictability of this role is what surprises most people since they tend to go to blissey / snorlax to wall it. Sub - Disable Subsitute Disable Focus Punch Tbolt Probably one of the best answers to any mono attacking pokemon and a good answer to curselax. However it may not be able to beat curselax since lax could continue boosting and this would eventually lead to a stall fest. Special Attacker With Wow Wow Sludgebomb Remaining 2 can be around taunt / painsplit / shadowball / sub Wow cripples any physical attacker. Sludgebomb hits anything that switches in hard with the risk of being poisoned. This sort of gengar can be ev'd in bulk and if so, then it can run taunt instead of painsplit while the ones which have a bit more special investment can run painsplit to recover it's health since it dies easier compared to a bulky one. ------------------------------------------------------- These are just some of the few sets, you can see many more with 252spak and 4 attacks, or a mixed gar with explosion etc. The usage stats show Gengar at around 51% , which imo is pretty high. It's sometimes easy to find a counter for each of the above sets of gengar but until you know it's moveset beforehand, you're screwed since it'll take out one or more of your pokemon by the time you're done knowing the set. With the split, gengar has become insanely powerful because of its 2 stabs, shadowball and sludgebomb with both of those moves having a secondary effect. One causes poisoning and the other with a special def drop. Gengar has an excellent typing considering that it's ghost which makes it immune to fight/normal and with some resists like bug. Poison allows it to never be toxiced and levitate just makes it perfect. I was earlier of the opinion that Arcanine is a hard on counter for Gengar so I've been running one but there have been many instances where Arcanine has either gotten poisoned or had a -spdef drop. In these cases, I realized that Arc is not truly a counter for Gengar. Taunt prevents arc from using morning sun, assuming that you switch it in. Making it easier for gengar to kill arcanine. Imo, I have always felt that something that cannot be walled is definitely uber. With most pokemon there is some awareness that you would have about what set it'll be but gengar has so many diverse roles which can turn a situation around completely. So yeah, please discuss and I'd appreciate it if we could all discuss about it in a civil manner.

  21. Since I'm no longer in the UU Council (probably will make a separate post on that), I figured I'll give the future council some food for thought. Now, more than ever, the council has a huge influence on the direction the tier will take. It all depends on the philosophy of the council, but also the philosophy of the community. In short, what should we deem as banworthy? To what can we adapt and to what not? Old UU was a great tier, it had a big variety of useable Pokémon. Only when stall become popular (this was around after the UU Invitational, I'll take partial responsibility) it became clear that it was the most superior playstyle in UU. It become more of a wallfest than even OU at times. Stall had the overhand in all three tiers. Now we have a new chance at trying to balance out the power of each playstyle. What direction do we want to take though? As I see it the UU Council has a few choices. They can let the offensive threats stay, which might result into more match-up based victories. Or they could give in and one by one ban all the powerful threats, the result would be the same UU we had before with some changes in mechanics. You can see the stance that the community has on this right now. Most 'UU Discussion' threads are focused on offensive threats. While threads like Slowking and Exeggutor pretty much get ignored, for now. But the ironic thing is that, UU usage doesn't reflect this at all. You can see in the usage stats that people still favor walling power over offensive power. Well, isn't it to be expected than that these threads pop up? People seem to like walls. And they seem to dislike the things that threaten their walls. But when adapting a different playstyle than stall, pure offense will become less of a strong pick. The thing is, most people like the fake safety that stall gives them. Look at the top 10 Pokémon used in UU right now: eight out of ten of these are wally Pokes with no outstanding offensive pressure. Now look at the discussion threads, they are all Pokémon that break the most commonly used Pokémon. There is an error in the way we are thinking, and if we continue doing that it might destroy the tier before it even goes on its way. The meta right now revolves around walls, but walls have problems with bulky offense, which is becoming more popular. Pokemon like Kingler, Azumaril, Kangaskhan and Hariyama can cause massive problems for passive teams. Is that a problem with these Pokémon though? Or is it a problem with favorism for 'safety first'. Stall has trouble against Bulky Offense, yes. But Stall can beat Bulky Offense (or rather Stall can 'not lose' against Bulky Offense). It will just be harder. But Bulky Offense in term has trouble with Hyper Offense and is matchup reliant on Bulky Offense vs Bulky Offense. Take for example the thread about Zangoose. It gets 'walled' fairly well by Armaldo, Solrock, Hitmontop, Donphan and even Omastar. While it gets checked by everything that is faster and Mach Punch users. Hyper Offense will have little trouble dealing with Zangoose, while Bulky Offense has more than enough answers in resistances and hard hitters. But still, it's seen as a threat because 'it shits on walls so well'. While it has close to none sweeping potential against a BO or HO team. This is just an example of the way we are thinking right now, at least that's how I see it. So like I said the Council takes in a crucial place right now in the forming of the tier, but more importantly the community has an even bigger role. How will we think, how will we adapt. What direction do we want to take? Because every ban will have massive consequences. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMTMr95oeMc

I would not complain if we had a matchmaking system where you are pairing with a random person and you should play a balanced team to counter or beat most threats, like showdown, but our only competitive mode are tournaments in which you know before hand against whom you play and you have only one chance, making it a scout game rather than skill, and it takes only one pokemon like trio or wynaut to win easily, making our current metagame a lottery practically.
