Lures: a comprehensive guide

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, im bringing a guide for the new items introduced on the holiday update 2022 (Sorry for the bad english). So lets start with the basic.

b1.png.4ca8becbc147ff7cb2d6777d6219ef0c.png b2.png.e56bd978a0dfde5114a939e4d121927f.png b3.png.0b515be5f2483f46f20798ca35b5c49c.pngWhat are Lures?p1.png.ade9b21bc11c2dc7e2194ec1c2ed3510.png p2.png.5f9b7a343b34bc2fec2cea82480da27d.png p3.png.e1dea85bcdd55d4f9af04385d80567a3.png

Lures are a single use item, similar to repels, they are only active for a limited amount of steps, and the effects are different depending on the type of lure: Normal or Premium.

Normal Lures

The normal lures (b1.png.4ca8becbc147ff7cb2d6777d6219ef0c.png b2.png.e56bd978a0dfde5114a939e4d121927f.png b3.png.0b515be5f2483f46f20798ca35b5c49c.png) can be adquired from the pokemart or the marketplace, there are three different types of normal lures: Basic, Super and Expert. All three offer the same effects, the only difference is their price and the number of steps (being 100, 200 and 250 respectively). The effects are the following:

  • The normal lures give you a 10% increase of wild pokemon encounter while walking, surfing or fishing.
    • The lure doesnt work if you are using sweet scent for wild encounters.
  • The pokemon are a bit stronger, having 1 or 3 levels more than usual.
  • You can encounter a wild double battle while the lure is active
    • Because Unova already has wild double battles due to Dark grass. You now can find this types of wild battles on normal grass too, but only if the lure is active.
    • If only one pokemon remains from the double wild encounter, the last pokemon has a very slim chance to call another pokemon for help, similiar to SOS battles from gen 7 (Thanks to SacredDiver for the discovery).
  • You can find rare species if the lure is active.
    • Some species are exclusive with lure, having a 5% to encounter a lure-exclusive pokemon.
    • The lure-exclusive pokemon are:

Premium Lures

The premium lures (p1.png.ade9b21bc11c2dc7e2194ec1c2ed3510.png p2.png.5f9b7a343b34bc2fec2cea82480da27d.png p3.png.e1dea85bcdd55d4f9af04385d80567a3.png) can be adquired from the gift shop or the marketplace, there are three different types of premium lures: Basic, Super and Max. Just like the normal lures, all three offer the same effects, the only difference is their price and the number of steps (being 200, 300 and 400 respectively). The effects are the following:

  • They have all the effects of normal lures, but with some differences:
    • 20% increase of wild pokemon encounter instead of 10%
    • 8% to encounter a lure-exclusive pokemon instead of 5%
  • You can encounter a bigger horde, this means that instead of a horde of 3 pokemon, with premium lure you can find a horde of 5.
    • This only applies if you are walking or surfing, it doesnt work with sweet scent.
  • Premium lures can increase the chance of secret shiny pokemon by 25%
    • However, it doesnt increase the chance of regular shiny.

 Mechanics/Features/Bugs?

The following observations im not quite sure if was intended or not, but this are the things that i noticed:

  • You can stack the lure with repels, having both effects active at the same time
    • However, the repel effect takes priority, meaning that the lure step will only start counting if the repel effect is over
    • If you use a repel after using the lure, the repel will be consumed first, and the lure will pause, until the repel is over
    • But for some reason, if you use a repel first and the the lure, the repel will start counting but not the lure, as was stated before. However, you can still find pokemon while the repel is still in effect, but they dont have the bonus levels or the exclusive encounters from the lure.
  • The lure stack with the safari steps.
    • You cant find double wild encounter while using a lure in the safari.
    • Both the lure and the safari steps are consumed at the same time, unlike the lure with repels.
    • It seems that the lure-encounter pokemon on the safari are much easier to capture, because they dont run away easily.
      • I did a test with Blissey, and the pokemon didnt run away after just one turn, it did after 8-15 turns of just throwing safari balls. This ended up happening after trying several times.
  • The lure works with fishing encounters.
    • You can find double wild encounters while fishing.
    • Everytime you use the fishing rod, you consume 5 steps from the lure.
      • This means that depending of the lure, you can use the fishing rod 20-80 times with a single lure.
    • When you are fishing and the lure is active, the level of the pokemon will be the highest from that area plus the extra levels from the lure
      • A test was done on dragonspiral tower, where you can find Dratini between level 25-40 and Basculin between level 35-55, when the lure was active, Dratini only appeared at level 56, that means that Dratini is taking the highest level of the stronger pokemon from that area (in this case Basculin), and using that level for the lure. Currently this only happens while fishing. (Thanks to pokemonmaster69 for the discovery)
    • You can also find lure-exclusive pokemon from fishing just like when surfing (Thanks to pokemonmaster69 and SacredDiver for the info).
  • The lure works with rock smash encounters (Thanks to SacredDiver for the info)
    • The pokemon get higher levels if the lure is active.
    • Using rock smash doesnt consume lure steps like when you use the fishing rod.
    • You can find a double wild encounter when using rock smash.

Spoiler

Love the guide! 🙂
I'm not entirely sure about this but I think Premium Lures give you a chance for those double encounters to be hordes of 3. I've used a lot of regular Lures and haven't run into a single horde of 3 that was supposed to be triggered by the lure (having different species than the hordes you can find normally without the lure). But I've seen my friend run into a "lure-horde-of-3" with a single Premium Lure (instead of just a double-encounter), exactly like the recent "Honey Tree" mechanic when you stack three honeys on a single tree. I know for a fact that those "lure-horde-of-3's" can be triggered with a Premium Lure but I don't know whether they can't be with a regular one or if it's just a very small chance. I think it's most likely that they're exclusive to Premium Lures but I could be wrong.
I was planning on going over the dex and making an index of other Lure-encounters but I haven't gotten to it yet, I would love to contribute to this guide when I get to it.

Thank you and good luck!

Things missing:

  • Lure-exclusive from Kanto
  • Lure-exclusive from Hoenn
  • Lure-exclusive from Sinnoh
  • Lure-exclusive from Unova
  • Possible translation?

Thanks to your guide, I can update some of my own a lot easier. All the best with your work MustangCZ.

I wasnt sure if i should put the prices on the guide or not, because the lures are new and the price on GTL can change from time to time.

I think this guide is finished, i already tested how the lure works, the locations, how lures interact with other items, etc. In the case of the spanish translation, I wanted to place it as a comment, i saw other guides do that and I thought that it could be better than placing it on the topic. The only thing i see myself updating, is the locations when johto is released, and any other changes that is done to lures when an update arrives.

Now i dont know what has to be done in the forums when a unfinished guide is completed, its my first time doing a guide after all, but thanks to everyone who gave me information on lures, especially locations.

Yes, the starters are exclusive to lures since the last update, you cant find them without the lures anymore.

Yes and No. Yes, starters can only be find with lures, No, isn't only they, Togepi's evolution line and Rotom are also Lure-Exclusive. Also, they can still appear on swarms? Not sure about that, if mons Lure-Exclusive can be found on swarms.

is it worth to use lures at places like staryu (rt 13) or dragonspiral fishing? it seems like staryu and dratini levels don't go up to the lure lvl 56. although i find a dratini once at dragonspiral with level 56 and lure.. confusing.

  • I'm not quite sure, the only pokemon you get from lures while surfing on route 13 is eelektross, so if you like that pokemon go for it.
  • You need to know that you get lure-encounter pokemon from walking and surfing, but not fishing, that means that the only effect of using the lure while fishing is having more stronger pokemon and the possibility of a double encounter.
  • I did a test, and i got a staryu while surfing with the lure on route 13. Normally the staryu is between level 35-55, but because the lure is active, you will always get the highest level from that encounter plus some extra levels, as in my case that I found a level 56 staryu.
  • The dratini is a special case, in most places, the pokemon have very similar max levels, so the lure does as intended, but on dragonspiral not every pokemon has the same max level, dratini max level while fishing is 40, but basculin, another encounter from fishing, has a max level of 55, so what the lure does is that it takes the max level from basculin (which is the strongest pokemon from that area) and applies it to dratini plus the extra levels from lure, thats why you got a lv56 dratini. This is not something that i knew, so thanks for the discovery!

I think you do get lure encounter fishing ive seen kingdra from lure at slateport when fishing. and yes you get the pokemon at the higher level but it seems to impact the encounter rate. dratini felt a lot less common than basculin but i only did little testing on it so maybe i have to do more

Can confirm. I get Mantine as a fishing encounter in Ever Grande City even though the Pokédex says it's a "water" encounter. I get Mantine as a surf encounter as well in the same location. My guess would be that Lure water encounters can also be encountered by fishing.

Would also like to add that if you KO one of the Pokémon in the double encounter, the other one has a chance to call another one for help (like the gen 7 SOS Battles). Seems to be a very small chance though.

Edit: Have gotten a Lapras by fishing in Route 19 as well. It does however seem to be rarer than Mantine, as it took me multiple lures to encounter a Lapras while I was getting multiple Mantines per Lure.

When i was doing the guide i tried to get dragonite from challenger's cave while fishing, and it didnt appear, then i tried on route 8 for a seismitoad and nothing, and finally i tried on driftveil city for a lanturn and nothing again, and in the three cases i used 20 expert lures, that give me the impression that you can't get the lure exclusive pokemon while fishing, but it turns out that i was just unlucky. Im gonna fix the guide then.

It seems to be that when multiple lure pokemon share the same location, one is more rare that the other? If that is the case, that means the the 5% could split with multiple pokemon, something like 4% for the common pokemon and 1% for the rare one? Like the one you commented with the Lapras? if that is the case, im gonna do some testing.

Also i didnt know about the SOS battle, i didnt experienced once on my entire time testing the lures, so im gonna add it the guide, thanks!

Forgive me, I might have phrased it poorly. Mantine and Lapras were each in their own different location. Mantine was in Ever Grande City Hoenn and Lapras was in Route 19 Kanto. Neither of them shared the location with another Pokémon.

It could be that I've gotten lucky/unlucky as well with the encounters but Mantine was so common it felt like more than 5%, I was getting them way too frequently. Lapras on the other hand was so rare it felt like less than 5%. I've used around 20 Expert Lures in the Mantine spot and around 10 in the Lapras spot.
I've noticed that the description of Lures says "5% chance to encounter lure-exclusive species". In the event that there's some truth to my observations and that they aren't the result of biased insufficient testing, I would assume that Lure encounters that aren't lure-exclusive species (that aren't starters/Togepi/Rotom) might have an encounter rare that isn't necessarily 5%.

I will do some more testing and get back to you with some numbers.

Oh, that explain my confusion, I thought maybe I had forgotten one of the locations when you mentioned Lapras and Mantine on the same spot, and i was looking at the dex for that, my mistake.

Also i will try again to search for Dragonite, Seismitoad and Lanturn, because genuinely i cant believe that after 20 lures on each spot i didnt find a single one.

To confirm but I think this is true for every type of encounter ? If by "pokemon" we mean the original pool of encounters, not the lure pokemons added, since they can be lower or higher level than that.

Also, Togetic and Togekiss are missing in list thing of locations, aswell as Monferno being wrongfully called Chimchar.

I've managed to get an encounter of each of these species by fishing in their respective locations.

Also, as an additional discovery, Lures seem to work on rock-smash encounters as well. I am unsure as to whether it increases the likelihood of getting encounters or not, it makes it possible to get double encounters however. It also seems to increase their level. Smashing rocks, unlike fishing, does not consume lure steps.
