    SirGaryOak reacted to Robofiend in [Denied]Gib Fairy Typing
    This will probably be a controversial suggestion, but here it goes..

    If you don't know what the Fairy type is, added in Gen VI, here's your backstory. I'll assume you've read this to avoid being overly explanatory.

    I'll cut right to the chase, PokeMMO deserves fairy type.

    Why?

    Fairy type checks some really strong threats across the tiers, making for more balanced metagames. Even the GameFreak developers said Dragons are too strong and we need something that checks them without having to nerf them. Right now, there are very few disadvantages to spamming Dragon Claw or Superpower on Dragon and Fighting type pokemon. Because of this, players are often use Steel and Ghost types to beat these moves, leading to a pretty shallow pool of possible outcomes. Since lots of physical attackers can also carry Fire Blast or Fire Punch, it's incredibly easy to fire off a Dragon Claw first and then use Fire Blast if you need to take out a Skarmory. Similarly, Fighting types will carry Thief or other moves to hit Ghost types, so they miss a prediction they can just retaliate by spamming Crunch/Theif. Fairy type complicates things and balances out the relative advantages of Fighting and Dragon (and Dark) Type attacks, all of which right now are kind of hard to check with the pokemon we have.

    We don't need fairy moves (yet), the typing would probably be enough. Sure, they won't take SE damage from anything but the pitiful Poison type, but it's not like any of them come without substantial flaws (Clefable's got middling defenses for a wall, Gardevoir is slow with bad def and Azumarill is slow and weak to the common Thunderbolt). In fact, having Fairy type moves would probably be a bad thing, given how few Steel, Poison and Fire types we have to check them.

    Anyway, there's my suggestion, I'm ready for y'all to complain but I think it'd be a good idea.

    Since about any other move is updated to the later generations, it is about time to discuss Bullet Seed and Icicle Spear.

    List of pokemon that learn the move:
    http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Bullet_Seed_(move)#Learnset
    http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Icicle_Spear_(move)#Learnset

    Odds of hitting...
    2 times - 1/3
    3 times - 1/3
    4 times - 1/6
    5 times - 1/6

    Average power = 79,2

    Basically, power becomes 25 from 10. When asking one of the developers why the power has not been updated, the answer I received was pretty much "because Senile does not want to". With the absence of abilities such as Skill Link or Technician, these moves are nowhere near overpowered and I would like to see them in game, as it would make a lot more pokemon more viable, especially the grass move which would provide many grass types with a good physical STAB move.

    Perhaps it is time the competitive community discussed this.

    SirGaryOak reacted to Senile in Is Team Preview Healthy?
    You have to keep in mind why Team Preview was added in gen 5. As generations progress, more and more viable pokemon are produced, as well as the massive power creep. Seeing your opponent's team in later gens is a big deal, because it means you can analyze their team and determine what you need to keep to deal with their threats. In Gen 6, you CANNOT afford to try keep a majority of your team alive and healthy, and unless you're running full stall (and sometimes even then), you really can't have a good answer to every threat on a team. So, knowing your opponent's team lets you know what pokemon you cannot afford to lose. Otherwise, it's very easy to lose your answer to something and have a third of your pokemon disappear, especially if your opponent has 2 sweepers with very similar answers.

    Of course, the cost of this is that scouting suffers and so does surprise factor, but these later gens have massive movepools. Most top pokemon have no less than 3 distinct sets, even Talonflame, a pretty move barren poke, has like 5 different sets. Because of this, there is still scouting as a component of the game, it's just of something else. Pokemmo doesn't have this, most sets are different by a few moves. There are super versatile pokemon, but they're the exception rather than the rule, and that's on top of our comparatively low amount of viable pokemon and heavily centralized metagame. Most surprise factor in this game comes from the pokemon themselves, as opposed to later gens when it's items and moveset. Team preview would kill most midgame scouting, an important part of the game. Because of this, I really don't think it fits, and team preview would be detrimental.

    Tl;dr: pls no

    SirGaryOak reacted to Barrage in Is Team Preview Healthy?
    There is a really long answer to this question and I'm sure Senile will come in here and talk about it (hue) so I will just give the summary.

    Team preview is meant to mitigate the effects of having a very fast-paced and punishing metagame. Gen 5 introduced team preview to give players a chance to react better to powercreep occurring from that generation, creating a potentially hyperoffensive meta that would be too punishing without team preview.

    None of the elements that spurred the need for this exist in the PokeMMO meta, so it isn't necessary.

    EDIT: NOR IS IT OBJECTIVELY BENEFICIAL.

    *Not so new anymore kek

    What is the goal of this guide?

    1. To explain the basics of the new breeding system.
    2. To explain how to acheive a perfect 6x31, correct nature pokemon, and how much it will cost (on a monetary level).
    3. To also provide a more "economical" approach to the breeding system.
    4. If you wanna know how much breeding might cost you, check out OldKeith's Guide

    What is NOT the goal of this guide?

    1. To argue about whether or not the breeding system should be changed.
    2. To complain about losing pokemon in the process.
    3. To vent anger at the system.
    4. i.e. Anything not related to receiving/giving help with breeding

    Disclaimer: This is a TEXT HEAVY, Graphic Minimal guide. If you just want to know the basics of the new breeding, then read the numbered list below. If you want to know how to breed what you want, then delve into the sea of text in any of the following three sections.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    A Basic Breeding Video (Highly recommend watching, especially if you don't like to read):
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    So, here are the most important mechanics in the new breeding system:

    1. Both parent pokemon are traded away to the daycare couple and will NOT be given back to the player.

    2. Two parent pokemon will produce ONE egg (no more, no less).

    3. An egg will hatch over a period of time (no steps or flags anymore).

    4. One can give an everstone to a parent with a desireable nature to have a 100% chance of passing that nature down to the offspring (the everstone WILL be consumed along with the parents).

    5. Three IVs are passed down directly from the parents to the child. The other three IVs are then calculated by the averages of the parents, which are rounded down.

    6. One can use a brace, which can be bought from a NPC who resides in each daycare for 10k each, and these braces can be given to a parent to ensure that a specific IV of your choice is passed down to the child (this DOES count as one of the three directly inherited IVs for the child).

    7. If a pokemon has two potential abilities, then there is an 80% chance that the mother's ability is passed to the offspring.

    8. The player is capable of switching a pokemon's ability with a consumable item; thus ability breeding is not a concern at the moment (mechanics for abilities will change in the future as stated here).

    9. You can choose the gender of the egg for a fee, listed in the spoiler below, which scales with the species' gender ratio (the more unbalanced the ratio, the more expensive).

    10. Genderless pokemon of the same evolution line (i.e. a magnemite and a magneton) can breed together. Note that you still cannot breed two dittos together (but ditto still can breed with any other pokemon).

    11. Hidden Power breeding is mostly pointless, since you can get a 6x31 pokemon with any hidden power you want thanks to typed gems (look up mysterious gems).

    12. This is a useful guide for egg move breeding.

    13. You can shiny breed in this game. 2 regular parents give normal (1/30,000 + modifiers) odds of getting a shiny. You cannot breed a normal pokemon with a shiny pokemon. If you breed 2 shiny pokemon together, the offspring will be shiny. The IV's are passed in the following manner:
    2 IVs are randomly selected, but can be dictated by Breeding Braces 2 IVs are randomly selected, but they choose a stat (of which cannot already be selected by the previous bullet point), and then picks the higher IV between the two parents the remaining 2 IVs are averaged between the two parents. Bred shiny pokemon's OT is determined differently than regular breeding. If the offspring pokemon is of the same evolution line as your OT shiny, then the offspring will have your OT. So, for example, you have a male shiny Charmeleon, and you breed with a random OT shiny female Charizard. Even though the female parent isn't your OT, the offspring Charmander will have your OT.

    This section is to give an example to a budget breeder's guide to breeding for a competitive pokemon. The goal is to get as close to a 31 speed and 5x25+ pokemon as possible with the least amount of money. This will use a lot less braces than the 6x31 section.

    Do not AFK Timeout your opponent unless your referee has stated you may. Disconnecting during a match will result in a DQ. Do not block your opponents, or the Staff running the Event. If there is evidence of this and disregarding staff requesting you to unblock said individuals you will be DQ'd. Volpi Clause (requesting to change channels for your matches) will not be allowed for this tournament. Entrants are encouraged to uncheck "Render Overworld in Battle". (Menu -> Settings -> Video). Due to a recent post by Desu (link), it has been decided that any occurrences of the 'Battle Freeze' bug will result in a DQ; This is because it is actively avoidable when following the necessary steps and slows down the pace of a tournament. Please be read the post before participating and be sure to follow what is said to avoid this situation happening to you. Once your match is called you will have 10 minutes to report to the table. A 5 minute warning will be given to you via whisper if you are not at the table. No time extensions will be given.

    SirGaryOak reacted to Noad in Trialling a new registration system for Official Events.
    You may already be aware that we are currently trialling a new registration system in some of our events. With the new registration system you will be asked to sign up one hour before the tournament starts. You are only allowed one sign up per forum account and as usual it will be first come, first served.

    We feel that this could potentially limit the amount of no shows for official events. It was recently used for the Tier Clash Tournament, overall registration seemed to go smoothly and Fudnud reported just 2 no shows from the bracket. It will also be used for my recently posted Speed Tournament on 3rd January.

    We have decided to open this thread to give players a chance to provide feedback of this new method, so that we can consider all aspects when deciding if we will use this system for all future events.
      If you are posting in this thread please stay on topic and state any reasons you have being for or against the new proposed system.
