From my tests: Its random, it depends the alpha instance. Some alphas are more easy to catch with timer ball, others with dream ball, it does not depend on which pokimon it is, but thats decided randomly so you should use both.

Imo RNG is fine if you can react to it, RNG should be something that makes it harder because you have to react to it. This year everything has been nerfed so hard that it removes autonomy from player to react to RNG.

Why tho? there are way too many ways to prevent botters(they've already implemented clicks detection in android) without absolutely recking the average players experience. It's sad that you guys will defend the game on anything, I too have many hours and like this game more than others but getting blind and accepting anything the devs throw is crazy, events are meant for fun, this event is not enjoyable for even the players having thousands of hours simply due to rng. Nobody other than no life nerds care if the pumpkin bags drop to 50k or low during event, atleast non nerds can farm some too, this event will just create artificial scarcity of such event items.

I really enjoy this event. I found that there is lot RNG that actually can be countered while the rest unfortunately brings us to defeat. Some people may disagree with the impossible RNG but I personally think that this what keep the pumpking hardmode is hard.
even though I've run this event smoothly so far, it can't be helped that the RNG sometimes punishes me heavily and forced me to defeat (like on the picture attached).
Ofcourse I'm very mad but what can I do is move on and learn what's my mistakes.

Ive spent more pokedollars on supplies and losing over and over from RNG on hard mode than ill ever make back from a few pumpking bags when finally winning. Events should be a fun and profitable experience not something that drains your money and stresses players out because we need 9 out of 10 rng rolls to go our way to even have a chance. Im not even in it for the money i just wanna get the particle on a few of my favorite mons, but its costing me tons of pokedollars to get nothing

I'm going to say what I did last year, but the difficulty of Pumpking should not be reliant on how much you participate on the forums/in a team and crack the code on what is the most niche set of mons that plays most efficiently against the boss. Difficulty that is created through the obfuscation of knowledge and information is frankly lame as fuck, especially in an MMO setting where an attempt costs resources, alongside your tools. I think they're going the absolute wrong direction from the previous year, and as a result they're making a less accessible event. My ideal event would to have him be beatable by most doubles comps. It's just surprising that the same team that made the insanely fun Ho-Oh and Giratina battle is also churning out this.
If it's for economic concerns, then they need to neuter the pumpking gift bags, or the rate that you get special candy to fight Pumpking, instead of making the battle even harder. Frankly I don't want to participate in the hard mode battle against him at all, and I'm just going to sell my candy.

Hard mode doesn't even use strategy, it's all RNG it's stupid 0% strategy 100% RNG
