Azphiel Posted November 30, 2022 Posted November 30, 2022 What is this ? This thread is being opened to discuss Staraptor in the UnderUsed Tier (UU) as it was placed in OU last month while UU was stabilizing, but would drop in December according to usage. The issue of the topic is to decide whether or not it is necessary to ban Staraptor to UUBL. Characteristics : -With its recently added hidden ability (Reckless) and great attack and speed stats, Staraptor has the potential to be a destructive force as a wall breaker as a Choice Band user, while also being able to be the hardest hitting Choice Scarf user. It would benefit from Reckless by using Brave Bird and Double-Edge, both being stabbed. When using a Choice Band, it would threaten to kill nearly any Pokemon in the tier on the switch. With a Choice Scarf, it is faster than most of the other Choice Scarf users of the tier, only outsped by the rare Mismagius and Zoroark and tying with Flygon. Its access to U-turn could allow it to facilitate a friendly Pokemon to enter the field. -However, Staraptor has mediocre defensive statistics and suffers from its Stealth Rock weakness, limiting the amount of time it can enter the field. On top of that, both of its devastating stab moves are recoil moves, limiting its survivability. Basically, Staraptor kills itself. On top of that, its mediocre defensive typing make it so that most priority moves are neutral against it, except Ice Shard that hits supereffectively and is commonly used by Mamoswine. Also, Staraptor being mainly used with Choice items means that you can usually take advantage of it once it is locked. Reckless : This Pokemon's attacks with recoil or crash damage have their power multiplied by 1.2. Does not affect Struggle. Calcs : (Note : I chose a Jolly nature for those calcs, an Adamant nature could arguably work on both Choice Band and Choice Scarf) Choice Band : Spoiler Bronzong : 252 Atk Choice Band Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Bronzong: 57-67 (32.7 - Notable checks/counters : -Bronzong is a steel type that isn't weak to fighting type, which makes it an ideal Staraptor check. At the moment, it is the 4th most used UU Pokemon, its overall utility makes it easy to fit into any team. However, Bronzong does not have a reliable recovery move, mostly relying on leftovers and still gets 3 Hit KO'd by Close Combat from Choice Band Staraptor. It is pretty much a counter to Choice Scarf Staraptor. -Gigalith could switch on both stabs, but not on Close Combat. -Rhyperior, if fully invested in HP, can even switch on a Choice Scarf Close Combat. Beware if it is Choice Banded. -Forretress "only" gets 2 Hit KO'd by Choice Banded Brave Bird, and can tank the other attacks easily enough. It could also use a Rocky Helmet. -Dusclops can only be hit by Brave Bird but would die in 2 hits from the Choice Band version. -Bold Rotom-Heat could serve as some emergency flying resist if it is full health and rocks are not on the field. -Steelix could have a nice niche as it also tanks Staraptor's stabs very easily. But again, beware the Choice Banded Close Combat. -Druddigon with Rocky Helmet and Rough Skin could pretty much kill Staraptor by switching into one of his recoil moves, which kill it in 2 hits. Feel Free to discuss on this matter. DoubleJ, DiosSlurpuff and TohnR 3
Umbramol Posted November 30, 2022 Posted November 30, 2022 While not the most versatile threat and being weak to rocks. I personally consider staraptor to be a little bit unbalanced judging by its pure power and the speed tier that is fantastic. Apart from bronzong and rhyperior nothing else checks it from the physical side of things. You don't have to predict with it, you just click its stab and it gets a clean 2hko against everything. Gigalith yes checks it's STABs but since gigalith is used to check multiple special threats, I personally wouldn't want it to be my staraptor switch in. But we can factor it as a check for the sake of the argument. Said checks though have no reliable recovery and the difference with other pokemons in the tier, there is no offensive check for this pokemon. You can easily run it as a scarf and clean up offensive teams with relative ease. The only thing you have to factor when using it is to keep away rocks for its longevity and avoid getting hit by priority moves. So in a battle scenario I always see staraptor getting 1-2 kills at least per game if it isn't used terribly. Regardless of what style you are facing. I don't think that's something healthy for the tier or something that is able to be handled. Because compared to other threats, you barely need to predict if your biggest check takes 1/3 of its HP with a resisted hit. So in my opinion staraptor should be put into BL TohnR, Azphiel, PoseidonWrath and 1 other 4
TohnR Posted November 30, 2022 Posted November 30, 2022 Good thread, yet again. Choice Band Staraptor is absolutely impossible to handle in UU with the lack of reliable answers such as Skarmory. As Azphiel noted, it may not instantly break through Bronzong, but with access to moves such as Uturn and Close Combat which aren't resisted it can quite easily take it down over time. Sacrifying Pokemon with Rocky Helmet to kill it through recoil is obviously an option but that means Staraptor still broke through your team When it comes to its speed tier, currently the only viable mons that are capable of outspeeding it are Mismagius, Zoroark and Durant. Out of those 3 the most relevant is Mismagius as it could switch in on any move except Brave Bird, and threaten with Thunderbolt : 252 SpA Life Orb Mismagius Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Staraptor: 174-205 (108.7 - 128.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO The other 2 can't really threaten it as effectively. We may also take Scarf Rotom into account for Revenge Killing, but locking in an electric move isn't really a safe option either When it comes to priorities, surely Ice Shard Mamoswine/Cloyster killing after rocks is the most relevant, sadly with the amount of water pokemon being used being forced into those could result in an heavy lack of momentum. If you combine how hard it is to switch in on Staraptor without sacrifying a Pokemon and how hard it will be to revenge kill it, all the more when not knowing which choice item they are using, you can only come to the conclusion that this Pokemon is Offensive Uber for the tier. Azphiel Posted November 30, 2022 Author Posted November 30, 2022 To be honest I'm not so sure. It looks really overwhelming for sure but it seems to me that Staraptor pretty much suffers from the Darmanitan syndrome : -Both are weak to rocks -Both are very frail -Both kill themselves when they hit The priority moves calcs are especially relevant to me because as Staraptor is likely to easily lose health, it could be in range of most of these

Darmanitan isn't as overwhelming for OU because fire is resisted by the dominant dragons, gets absorbed by chandelure, resisted by waters and rocks. So in OU while darmanitan is very strong you can easily fit in checks for it both offensively or defensively. Staraptor gets checked by 2 mons in UU defensively and none offensively. So in that tier you can easily spam it's stab and not factor the drawbacks nor need to predict correctly to get a decent hit off. Worst case scenario you ve done 30% damage to a bronzong for example. TohnR Posted November 30, 2022 Posted November 30, 2022 (edited) Darmanitan in OU can't really be compared with Staraptor in UU First difference being the speed tier, most of the offensive meta is faster than Darmanitan (95) in OU, when most of it is slower than Staraptor (100) in UU. Add to that the popularity of weather teams that outspeed and nerf Darmanitan's power when Scarf Staraptor doesn't face such issues in UU. Second difference being that Staraptor has access to 2 useful immunities that allow him to enter the field against certain Pokemon for free, when Darmanitan struggles with that aspect. Sure they aren't the best immunities to have especially in UU which has plenty of levitators and flying threats and not too many ghost moves being used (mostly mismagius & spiritomb), but it's still something Third difference is the realistic amount of mons that can safely switch in (only Bronzong for Staraptor) or abuse locked STABs. Garchomp, Dragonite, Salamence, Chandelure are all threats than can reclaim offensive momentum after a Darmanitan Flare Blitz kill. How do you get such a thing with Staraptor in UU ? I can only think of Bisharp that could setup in the face of a locked STAB but it currently isn't as viable as the OU mons I named (mostly because Poli/Crawdaunt are issues for it). Your only option is pretty much switch to Bronzong/Rhyperior or sac and use priority to Revenge Kill. That's way too restrictive imo When it comes to prios, hazard weaknesses and recoil damage, they both share flaws so I agree in some way, one hates Aqua Jet the other is weak to Ice Shard. And while Staraptor is immuned to Spikes/Tspikes, Darmanitan is immuned to Will-O-Wisp crippling. You could say their flaws are on even footing, but their strenghts aren't Edited November 30, 2022 by TohnR Umbramol and Azphiel 2

I legit don't understand what made you guys drop it from UUBL, or the reasoning behind it, bronzong gets hard chipped overtime, and with the use of uturn, and another strong offensive mon like lets say crawdaunt, gatr, toxicroak, yanmega for example, you are always under pressure. I also think cband is likely not the only viable set, and scarf can likely do a lot of stuff too, granted the trade off in offensive, means stuff like mismagius, durant, zoroark lose the ability to check it safely.

Huargensy Posted December 1, 2022 Posted December 1, 2022 Staraptor is now quickbanned to BL1 Hello everyone, as most of us already know, Staraptor was dropped to UU recently due to the very few times it was picked in the tier Over Used, being so, even days before, we've been discussing it, reading other player's comments and more recently reviewing some UU ladder duels. After all this feedback, the Tier Council decided that it was necessary to hold the vote as soon as possible. With a total of 5 votes in favor of the ban and 1 against, the result of this vote concluded in a quickban of Staraptor from UU(Uber offensive). The recently addition of Reckless to Staraptor as its Hidden Ability buffed the offensive damage of it to the point of being unsuitable for UU. Additionally a base speed (100) that is only outsped by 3 Pokémon in the tier, two powerful stab moves with 120 power that receive the bonus from the ability (Brave Bird, Double Edge) and the capability to hit those mons that resist its double stabs (Bronzong, Rhyperior, Bisharp, Gigalith) with Close Combat makes it very difficult to counter defensively and offensively. Even if it only has one very monotonous set, it's not relevant when you only need one set to delete most of the metagame. The Recoil is its biggest problem, you usually have to click a lot on Brave Bird or Double Edge in most of the battles, but really, you shouldn't mind losing Staraptor to recoil if you've already killed 2/3 of your opponent's Pokémon in the process. I will try to better detail the sets that were analyzed Choice Band Staraptor @ Choice Band Ability: Reckless EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe Jolly Nature - Brave Bird - Double-Edge - U-turn - Close Combat Probably the most dangerous set, running a Choice Band on it makes Staraptor a great Wallbreaker, with the capacity to 2HKO pretty much the entire tier, no matter how defensive, while still having a higher speed than average to exploit slower things, leaving only bronzong as a counter, but at the same time making it even more difficult for him to hold onto Staraptor throughout the match. You can calmly hit Brave Bird to everything that enter the field, even if something enters that has resistance to his moves, it will end up taking too much damage. Choice Scarf Staraptor @ Choice Scarf Ability: Reckless EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe Jolly Nature - Brave Bird - Double-Edge - U-turn - Close Combat Using a Choice Scarf on it makes Staraptor increase its already high speed, giving it the possibility of outspeed other Choice Scarf users, this, added to its high offensive power makes it very difficult to stop with offensively mons, having to opt for priority moves or a rare Choice Scarf users like Mismagius or Durant, priority is also an option, but it's even able to take an Ice Shard Life orb from Mamoswine, so you need to at least have it recoiled or chipped enough to try to kill it with priority, which means having to lose some Pokémon along the way to receive any stab. In another point, it does great damage against walls that aren't named Bronzong/Rhyperior.
